Finished or Not Friday

I have a fully finished SAHRR. If you are not familiar with this yearly challenge you can read about it Here! These posts  track some of my process. Center Block and Round One! Round 2 & Round Three followed. Long story but it ended up like this after adding Round 4, (Sliced Squares) and Round 5 (Quarter Log Cabins) and Round 6 ( Kite Blocks). 

I wasn’t sure about the kite blocks, but they ended up sort of  looking like “bows” on the split square “Christmas packages”! Not intentionally but I like it. 

I sent it to the quilter. Now it’s bound and completely finished. Well, it still needs a label. But finished for now.

Do you remember dying Easter Eggs?   We did dye eggs. I was the oldest so l helped my mom get ready. The thing I remember most is the dye was added to hot water and vinegar. Ooh the smell!

Did you have the crayon to premark them? I  remember having the marking crayon that acted as a resist to the dye, but I remember this when I was a young mother and my daughter loved making the words or designs show up like magic. 

What did you do with them? As a child, and the oldest, I always hid the eggs and my sister and brother hunted for them. As parents, the dad hid the eggs so the kid could look for them. I often had to remind him not to put them too high. There was frequently snow on the ground so the egg hunt happened in the house.

We have had a nice couple of days this week. The trees are budding out in the yard. I still haven’t seen flowers, but to be truthful,  my yard doesn’t have perennials. But my Holiday Cactus decided to make one bloom!

I have been reading about mushrooms coffee. Mostly the Ryze brand is what I have noticed in commercials and ads on Facebook.  But there is a product called Mud/Wtr, that my granddaughter had mentioned. I read up on that one. Seemed like it would have more flavor with the chai spices and the cocoa. The jury is still out. I tried it yesterday. But I got a frother in my intro pkg. ❤️

Got the SAHRR back from my quilter Aggie. It’s gorgeous. I’ll be hand stitching the binding to the back today at my stitching group. The quilting is gorgeous. Holly leaves, berries and swirls. 

We/I started watching  Virgin River , Season 6.  It’s a Chick Flick, based on books by Robyn Carr. Mr Busy sits and plays on his iPad, at the kitchen table like me or on your lap in front of the tv? at an actual desk? 2025~~SAHRR FINISHED PARADE

 

Today is the day for the SAHRR Parade. I’m linking up at Quilting Gail.

This is how my project (just the top) finished. 

I used some red fabric for the backing. 

It’s called Autumn’s Charm, but it looks Christmas-y to me. 

As I was making the back I noticed that the white portions of the salvage were pinkish. I did remember prewashing that piece. But decided to stay stitch around the edges and wash it again when I washed my dresser topper. 

I did that yesterday. I used 2 Color Catchers but did not put it in the dryer.

This is the dresser topper just out of the washer! No pink! All good!. 

 Last night I cut a piece of Hobbs batting, 48 X 48 and this morning when I get back from the Rec Center, I’ll press the backing and get it ready to deliver to my quilter. Her husband had knee replacement surgery, so she took a short break from her long arm. 

This is my 3rd time participating in SAHRR and I am most pleased with the outcome. My success stems, I think, from having enough of consistent background fabric and some good coordination of the other fabric. Scrappy is not easy to do on these projects.

ScrapHappy Saturday March 8th

It’s been a busy  week  here at Casa Busy Hands! I worked on the current Project Quilting. If you are interested  my post is Here. 

It had been fairly nice early in the week. I had to get some routine blood work done , so I decided to stop by the hospital lab on my way to Thursday Stitchers. That went well, the young phlebotomist was amazing!  Quick and painless. 

Then it snowed. When I got home from the library, our back deck looked like this!  By morning there was 5 inches. 

I fixed the blue potato chip block that had same fabric touching!!🫣

I sewed them as Leaders and Enders while sewing the PQ wall hanging and finishing up the final borders for the Stay At Home Round Robin. 

Those kites look a little like bunny ears! Totally inappropriate for a Christmas themed quilt. I was hoping for tassels!. Oh well!

Stay At Home Round Robin. Round #6

 

This week’s hostess for the last round of SAHRR, is Emily from Darling Dogwood.  Emily suggested the kite block. I perused the internet, You Tube, some books I own. My blocks need to be 3” finished. Most pieced blocks I found were paper pieced. I did find one I could copy for free, but I don’t really like paper piecing. Then I found a tutorial using a square and two rectangles to make a 6 1/2” block. I thought, I should be able to just do 1/2 measurements. Maybe cut a smidge bigger so there is wiggle room for trimming. Then last night while reading emails and blogs, I ran across Diann from Little Penguin Quilts’ post for Midweek Update!  Hooray. She’s doing little kites too!

She used a 4” square and 2 rectangles 2.5” x 5”. So using the tutorial from Scrapdash.com, called Catch That Kite, and Diann’s adjustments, I cut squares and rectangles. I did a test block because it’s a bit fiddly. 

I won’t accidentally use this one in this Christmas themed quilt!

Then I proceeded to sew 4 kite blocks, 3 1/2 “ unfinished. I’m using the same colors, cream, reds and greens. Varied pairs of kites. 

Which way do  you like them? Skinny points touching or fat bottoms ( actually the top of the kite) touching?

Stay At Home Round Robin. #5

 

Monday Feb 17. 

Boy, am I jealous of those of you who have EQ8 or other design software. Round five has me scratching my head. My wall hanging/table topper is nearly as big as I want to go. It’s 33.5”X33.5” after round 4. 

Brenda at Songbird Designs is the designer  of Round 5. Her post was stubborn and did not post when she had scheduled it when I looked first thing Monday morning. So I visited the other designers. Wendy used a 3” paper-pieced whole log cabin block. Others used a partial log cabin block. Some 1/2, some 1/4. I had intended to make my next border, the last one, by combining Round 5 & 6.  And to do it at 3.5”.  So for now, I will contemplate color choices and possible placement of a 1/4 log cabin. A 3.5’ quarter log cabin. 

Friday, February 21st

After finishing and posting Project Quilting 16.4 = Birthstone, I started thinking about the 1/4 log cabins for SAHRR. Maybe I’ll make 3three and see how they look on one corner. Well, several chapters of my audiobook later, I have this. Hmmm!

I think I like it. I used fabric that appeared previously. I found another scrap of the lighter leaf print, but only enough to do 12 1.5” squares as the second log. I added the green used in the Sliced Sqaure blocks from Round 4 as block 3, then blocks 4 & 5 were the background cream. I think it works.

ScrapHappy Saturday

 

I’ve used up my blue 2” strips, so now I’m digging into slightly bigger scraps. I don’t save and sort 3.5” scraps. But I have some chunks and cut into FQs . So I’ll be good. I’ve been using my potato chip blocks as Leaders and Enders as I sew on the SAHRR and the current Project Quilting.  

If you have been following the saga of my SAHRR, then you will know that there has more unsewing than there was actual sewing. So I got 2 more potato chip blocks made this week. The middle one is from last week. 

And the SAHRR looked like this .

The “wrong” ones have been picked apart and the correcting strips inserted. Today I will sew the other borders. Phew! I need to be free on Sunday to do Slow Stitching, while contemplating the PQ prompt. 

It’s cold and not nice here, so I will sew interspersed with laundry and meal preparing.

Stay at Home Round Robin. Round #4

   

Wendy at Pieceful Thoughts brings us Round #4.  She calls it a Sliced Square.  I like the way hers zig zag along the outside edge. I have lots of angles and didn’t trust myself to make the points match. I got an early look at this prompt….I was scrolling on my iPad in bed late on Sunday night and the blog post was up. I read it but was thinking of another way to do the slices. 

Monday morning while enjoying my coffee and a bit of quiet time, I read Kathleen’s post. Hey, that’s what I was thinking and she assured me that there are no quilt police!.

If I could use the Sliced Squares to fill in the spaces between my stars, that would keep my top from getting bigger than I had planned.  But what colors? Cream with green, it was kind of blah! 

I sure didn’t like the big chunks of green. I used the cream background with a green strip. I tried a charm square I had cut (red plaid, I’m fond of plaid). I inserted a 1 1/2’ piece of green print. I like it. I think. I slept on it. 

I decided on the red, when I realized I had only 9 squares in my charm pack collection. I didn’t think I had any more of that fabric, but I searched my reds. Hooray! I found a 1/4 yard. It’s karma. The red it is. I cut, sliced and sewed, til I had 16-

5” squares.  I sewed each pair together, then attached them to the center stars on each side. Can you guess what happened?  

I guess my B in Advanced High School Algebra and Geometry, didn’t help much! 🤪. Too long ago, I guess!

I need added fabric. Top- dark green, Middle - cream background or Bottom-the red plaid? Which would you do?

Guess I’m done for now. I’ll pause until round 5 and 6. ‘Cause I’m befuddled.

Stay at Home Round Robin. Round #3 Stars

   

Round 3 is hosted this week by Gail at Quilting Gail. She challenges us to add stars. 

I decided on 4.5” finished Friendship Stars for SAHRR. I used a chart I found at Generations Quilt Patterns  I wasn’t looking forward to  cutting and sewing all those small HSTs. I read that some participants used their AccuCutter. I have one, but don’t have a lot of dies. I find them to be very expensive. However, a blogger friend did send me some used ones that she ended up not wanting. I gladly and gratefully accepted them. I have one that cut triangles and squares for 2 1/2 inches pieces making a 6.5” star. I had decided that was too big . But I could cut them, sew the HST and trim them . That seems to work better for me anyway. 

But I took a break to go renew my drivers license and when I returned to my machine I just sewed the pieces I had cut. Egad  Judy!!. I wondered if I could use the correct size little ones in the corners. I’d need 2 more and then use the big one in the middle of the top, bottom and sides. I was planning on rectangles to complete the round. 

Yuk!   Nope!  So back to the drawing board. I printed the chart and grabbed my seam ripper.

The two that were too big were taken apart and the pieces cut to two inches. Then I recut all the accucut pieces. It was a project. But as of 5:30 pm on Saturday, they were all resewn together. I still don’t like the big rectangles of green to complete the round. And it’s just about as big as I want it. So I’m waiting to see what the Round 4 will be. I’m hoping I can use that prompt in this same border.
