Hot Flash in the Pan

Sharing at Table Scraps Challenge for August 2025.

I finally struggled through the Table Scraps Challenge that was this month’s color, aqua and the prompt of Hot Flash.  If you log onto this post, at The Joyful Quilter , you will see the various ways other bloggers interpreted the challenge.

Every month this year I have used my cutting scraps, sometimes also my scrap baskets to make crumb blocks and use them in the TSC. So aqua scraps became a rectangle.

I folded it in half over some scrap batting. And proceeded to appliqué some images and letters. If you have done applique, you know the “reverse image” conundrum. Letters are an extra struggle. An H, an O and a T are easy. They are the same right side up or flipped over. Other letters not so easy. Think F, L, P ,N.  You get the idea.

Now I’m no artist. I can barely draw an acceptable heart. I use the internet a lot! I search for free images, with no copyright . FLASH was not easy. Every one I found referred to The Flash. The movie, the cartoon.

©️

So I slashed and cut and redrew and cut again. Acceptable for this “soon to be covered by a hot pot of soup”, hot pad.

And as of Saturday at 1:30pm , it was done.

I’m calling it a Hot Flash in the Pan

I finished it with a leftover strip of binding, cut from 2 1/4” down to 1 3/4”. I use the Edyta Sitar technique for smaller items. You can find the YouTube video here. https://youtu.be/jWauykQzr7w?si=rnh8V0fi0PEfc45o  or search FQS videos for the double fold binding. It’s 11 years old!

Sewn on the back , wrapped to the front and sewn down with decorative stitch #26 on my old Bernina. It is a  sort of featherstitch. I like to use these challenges to try new ideas and techniques.

Mr Busy took  me out for lunch, so I’m just now posting this. Out to lunch in our world means drive through Jimmy John’s sub shop and take it to our favorite park to eat. Then a stop at the hardware store for a new shower head for the master bath. Fun times!!

Now I’m off to read the posts at Table Scraps Challenge and Scrap Happy Saturday.

ps: I got interrupted again and didn’t get this posted til Sunday. 😕

Last Aqua Chip Block, a Crumb Creation and a Struggle with Letters

This week has been a struggle. Why? I’m not sure. Maybe it’s the weather, maybe it’s the hint of winter, maybe it’s something else.

I finished the embroidery of the label for the heart quilt that will go to my friend’s new granddaughter. I can’t show the label, because I haven’t asked for permission from the new parents. But you have all seen the front in this Post.

One final Aqua potato chip block for the 5th Saturday.

I’ll linking up to RSC and ScrapHappy Saturday at Angela’s blog. Hoping for a long weekend to sew!

I LIKE Thursday

Sharing some good things with others at Not Afraid of Color

I shared this with my book club, but if you substitute “too much fabric” for “too many books” this works for us quilters and makers, also!

I’m not sewing much but are getting the boos is sewn into rows on this one. I’ll show my progress on Friday.

I am listening to an audible selection, while I’m doing hand stitching, and while I’m doing my morning walk. Have you read this one? It’s one of the summer reads for my book club. I recommend it highly.

LeeAnna suggested this conversation starter.

do you like amusement parks? which one is your favorite? Do you like rides or shows better?

Mr Busy and I took a “just us” trip to Elitchs Gardens in Denver in the summer of 1969. He likes amusement/carnival rides. I hate them. We rode the roller coaster. I didn’t like it, but I like him so I did it. The only other exposures to carnival rides and such were local county fairs in South Dakota and a state fair in Arizona when our great grandchildren were preteens. Those were traveling Ferris Wheels, Tilt-a-Whirl, and carousels. We did visit Spokane Washington on a motorcycle vacation to Glacier National Park and beyond, and rode a large beautiful carousel there. It was wonderful.

I tried the new option to let blogger add links. Let me know how it looks to you.

August 28th is a special day to me. It was my mother’s birthday. She would have been 103 today. She almost made her 90th birthday. I miss her a lot.

This is one of the last photos I have of her.

Slow Sunday Stitching

Stitching on Marcellus and friends. Last week I talked about a friend in Oregon who has finished her Biscornu. I contacted her and she said I could share the photos. So here they are.

Isn’t her work beautiful. The stitcher’s name is Linda. The pattern is from Heartstring Samplery in Sandy, OR.  Beth Twist of Heartstring Samplery taught the class and it was held at Cynthia’s of Bend, in Bend OR.

I hope mine will look 1/2 as good. I made a little progress on octopus #4.

I’m also Hand embroidering the name and birthdate on the Glowing Hearts baby quilt. I’ve blurred out the personal info. But her name is Juliet and she is adorable.

Aqua Chips and Crumbs

Linking up late Saturday early Sunday with some aqua sewing. Some days don’t go as planned. But I am linking up with ScrapHappy Saturday this Sunday Morning.

Here are all four potato chip blocks so far.

While stitching these, I worked on some crumb blocks.

Then searched the internet for images of flashes , fire, lightning. IYKYK!. Table Scraps Challenge is just around the corner. 😀 🔥♨️❤️‍🔥⚡️

And of course I STILL stitching octopuses!

Time flies ***

How can it be Friday already.

I completely missed I LIKE Thursday, yesterday. Mr Busy had a doctor appointment early, there was a grocery pickup, my stitching group met and went out to lunch together.

So I’ll answer LeeAnna’s conversation starter. Do I like Dairy Queen.?  We have a local DQ, and stop every now and again. The treats are kinda expensive in calories. Mr Busy always orders a Peanut Buster Parfait. I will get a a Blizzard. My favorite is Cookie Dough, but I’ll eat any flavor except cherry. LOL.

Some good thingthis week. I have 7 tomatoes on the 1 plant that made it into the ground.

Now if we can just have enough warm weather for them to ripen. Our earliest freeze has been September 21st. But a few places in our state, south and west of us had freezing nighttime temps last week. The Farmers Almanac is predicting, earlier cold, colder temperatures, more snow and a longer Winter. YUCK!

I found this on the internet and had to share.

The string blocks are slowly being sewed together. I’ll keep you in the loop.

I made baked banana oatmeal this morning. It was a new one for me. Both of us thought it was really good.

Banana Baked Oatmeal.

One last thing: the baby has arrived. I’m embroidering her name and birthdate on the back.

I do not have permission to share her whole name yet. But it’s beautiful.

I’m sharing with Not Afraid of Color, go there to find others.

Sunday Porch Stitching

This morning it is calm and a bit cool. I have on long pants and a light summer jacket. But the birds are singing, the sun has just come up, the lawn sprinkler has just about finished it’s Sunday morning session.

It’s a perfect morning to be stitching on the porch. I just started on the 4th and last octopus on the biscornu. Can used the light blue tentacle just to the right of octopus #3?

I’m anxious to finish this after seeing a friend’s finished one. She lives in Oregon but was a stitching quilting buddy during her time in Wyoming.

Also, since last week talked I finished HELLO SUMMER. It’s not fully finished, but I want to frame it.

I think I need to initial and date it too!

I may start on this soon. If done on 36 ct linen. 1 over 2, it’s tiny. Only 3.6” square. It’s cute though.

Guess, I’d better get to stitching instead of blogging. The sun will be around the corner soon and Mr. Busy will be waking up. I’m linking up with Kathy at Slow Sunday Stitching

Scraphappy Saturday

There was some sewing done this week. Another aqua potato chip block. That makes 3. While checking my calendar for something else I realized August has 5 Fridays. I’m having to scrounge for 12 different aqua fabrics for each block, without cutting up an intact fat quarter! I know, I know!  What the heck am I saving them for?

And I’m back to evening stitching on Marcellus and friends.

It’s good sometimes to step back and really look at a stitchery piece. I can see some missed stitches on octopus #2. And #3 still needs tentacles 5, 6 ,7 & 8 completed.

I’m joining Angela and friends for ScrappyHappy Saturday. There are some fabulous projects being worked on.

I Like Thursday

As I was preparing my I LIKE  Thursdays post for this week, I realized I completely spaced out las Thursdays. Gosh, I don’t know why except I was focused on getting a quilt ready to bind so I could take it to my stitching group.

I found the meme on Facebook. . I wish I could give credit.

Other things I liked this week. At the end of our street, where it joins with Wy Hwy 14-16 is a planter. It was built by our city and then offered to individuals or groups to plant and maintain. This one is lovingly taken care of. ( Some are not)

This pretty little poppy just blooming ⤴️ and one just ready to bloom planted next to it. ⤵️

My cooking mojo has left the building. So I was happy to find that Mr Busy liked these Knorr Sides. On the back there is a QR code to scan to find recipes to turn the sides into a skillet meal. On these hot summer afternoons, that’s easier than  heating up the oven.

This one is called Marry Me Chicken and Penne. Though it may not have enticed him to “marry me” again, it did make him stay!LOL

I really would have liked to get a picture of the Sturgeon Moon the other night, but it’s pretty bleak.

It was way more glorious in person.

LeeAnna’s conversation starter for this week.

I just saw recipes for Fudgecicles would you want a fudgecicle or orange creamcicle?

I like them both. Fudgecicles are easy to find and even replicate. But an orange creamsicle is rarer and not easy to make in your own kitchen. So I choose a  Creamcicle. Yum!

I leave you with this photo of our 9 year old great granddaughter’s new shoes. Tiny little kitten heels, with bows and pearls. Next thing you know she’ll be going to the prom.!

Slow Sunday Stitching.

I’d really hoped to finish Hello Summer this last week, but it was not to be.  I needed to work on the Glowing Hearts QAL,  hosted by Sandra at mmmquilts. I was very, very late to the finish. I trimmed it up, constructed the binding and got it ready to hand sew down on Wednesday,

Many of you have followed my slow progress, but it is done. And before the baby arrives. A win-win.

So there was some progress on Hello Summer, but it is not finished. The larger watermelon slice is nearly finished and the border needs to be finished. Then I can frame it.

And get back to work on the octopus biscornu.

Today it will warm up a bit from earlier in the week. A high of 80° is predicted today. But we don’t have humidity, so it should be pleasant to stitch out on the deck.  Fingers crossed.
