Table Scraps Challenge ~ orange and basket!

It’s time to show off your Tables Scraps Challenge projects for August. Based on the color selected for August by Angela from Rainbow Scrap Challenge and So Scrapoy- Orange and a prompt published by Joy from The Joyful Quilt - Basket, I started with crumb blocks as I have been doing this year.  My cutting table and cutting surface looked like this several times!

As the month progressed I searched for ideas!

I finally settled on this basket pattern from Ayumi Takahashi. It has been in my pattern notebook since 2009. If you go to  Pink Penguin, there will be a list of her tutorials. She doesn’t post any more but several tutorials are still accessible. It’s called Patchwork Fabric Basket.

I look some liberties with the pattern, instead of patchwork and linen I used “ made fabric” by sewing a plethora of orange and orange like scraps together.

I used this variegated thread that’s been in my stash forever! One day maybe I’ll use it up!

A close up of the serpentine quilting.

And my ugly fingernails!  If I do this again with crumb fabrics I will probably just use a medium weight iron on interfacing. The bulk of the batting and all the seams in the crumb blocks made it a struggle to turn right side out! It’s a little basket! 5”wide x 3.5” high x 4” deep.

I didn’t need another little basket so decided to add 2 sets of seasonal napkins made from four fat quarters.

I’ll put this little “surcee” in the mail soon to our youngest granddaughter and her fiancé!

I LIKE Thursday 8.30.24

We’re sort of in the “dog days” of summer! Not a lot happening! We are glad that most of the fires that were burning around us are now between 5% and 88% contained. Total  acres burned is almost 400,000. But no loss of life!

Mr Busy and I are binging on a series on Netflix called Dark Winds!

It is set in New Mexico and Arizona on the Navajo Nation Reservation. It’s a well told story I think. We are enjoying it.

I borrowed this book from the library last week. Homecoming by Kate Morton.

Homecoming Book Cover

I’ve been listening to the audiobook for our book club. We go back to meeting monthly, in September. I’m looking forward to meeting again.

I haven’t tried any new recipes, but hope to make a zucchini cake this weekend.

And I finally was able to pick some tomatoes! One at a time. These are #2 &#3! We ate the first one right away!

And I got my hair trimmed up. I’m letting  it get a little longer. Then maybe a perm!

Gosh, I really don’t like pictures of myself!

Mid Week Happenings

The weather has cooled a bit. We had a bit of rain, but it’s still windy, so the rain didn’t help much . Fires are still burning in our area, none of them fully contained. No loss of life or homes, but grassland grazing areas are devastated, many ranchers lost cattle. Cattle are important , it’s their bread and butter!

On a brighter note, I got a haircut! Well a trim, actually. I’m going for a different look. Wish I’d taken a photo when Cassie finished with me. I was pretty pleased! This morning however, we are back to flat and a bit longer. I’m leaning toward a perm! Hmmmmm?

No makeup, wrinkles and all! Why is it the camera pic looks worse than how I see myself in the mirror!?

Today would have been my mother’s 102 birthday.  I miss her lots! Especially today!

I actually got to spend some time in my sewing room. I made 2 sets of 2 seasonal napkins for my youngest granddaughter and her fiancé in Vermont.

I’m trying to use up this variegated thread that has been in my stash a long time.  The directions were shared from Little Penguin Quilts.  That Moxie Girl’s instructions are here!  I made 7 napkins for our oldest granddaughter and her family, and two for our daughter for Halloween last year. They are reversible rectangular napkins from 2 coordinating fat quarters. You can see that post here!

Halloween themed

And Thanksgiving too!

These will go in the mail to Granddaughter #3!

Slow Sunday Stitching - Looking Forward To September!

The Temperature Heart is an ongoing project!   I try to stitch a week at a time. Here is where I stopped..August 18th is partially completed, marked with a pin.

You can see it’s been hot here. Of course there has been Wyoming’s famous but unwelcome wind. This is what happened this week!

Fires are still burning. Ranchers have lost grasslands, outbuildings and some livestock. We need rain! Luckily no lives have been lost and at last count, no residences!

I’ll spend part of today, quietly praying and think of those affected by these fires, and of the brave selfless firefighters from our community and from far away communities. And I will stitc more on the “U” in my Autumn Bell Pull!

ScrapHappy Saturday’s 4th Orange Saturday

Linking up with Angela at ScrapHappy Saturday

Working on my orange basket entry for the  TableScraps Challenge. I’m using crumb blocks as I hav3 all year. Crumb blocks are great ways to use up all the bits and pieces of fabric too good to just toss in the trash! At least, IMO! I’m also using up partial spools of thread and partial bobbins.

Just some of the pics of my cutting table ⤴️.     and sewing surface. ⤵️

I’m also trying to listen to an Audible title, The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store!  I can listen when I’m hand stitching, but not when I’m at my machine. And not when I’m tired. The narrator has a calm soothing voice, wonderful in the inflection of the different character’s voices,  but I’ve fallen asleep and then had to back track. Not the story’s fault, mine!

It is one of 2 summer reads for my F2F Book Club. I’ve finished The Covenant of Water! Also very good! We meet again in September.

I’ll be back next Saturday to share my Table Scraps Challenge entry!

Slow Sunday Stitching

I’m late! But will Slow Sunday Stitch this evening!

I had company over the weekend! Our daughter drove up from Loveland after work on Friday. It was dark by the time she got here. I always worry about the last hour and a half of her trip coming north. It’s a two lane, with lots of big truck traffic. In the dark always the possibility of antelope, deer, or rabbits on the highway. But no problems.

She came to attend the funeral of her best friend from high school’s younger brother. He was 57. Her daughter and her BFF’s daughter were also friends until they became young adults. So there was a good reunion. Needless to say I didn’t stitch this morning. All have left our house now and I will pick up and do dishes, then get out the Temperature Heart

( the white headed pin is marking July 22nd, so I need to finish July and get started on August,)

and the Autumn Bell Pull! I’ve barely begun the second U in Autumn. I’m a middle starter, so have marked the middle og my fabric and will do this letter. Then I’ll probably do the T next. Are you a center starter or do you start at the top?

I’ll be stitching while watching TV this evening. Join me won’t you? Check to see what others are doing at Kathy’s Quilts - Slow Sunday Stitching

ScrapHappy Saturday. August Orange

It’s Saturday! It’s Saturday! And I’m linking up with Angela at ScrapHappy Saturday

I have to say it twice. This week has been interesting! I haven’t been “on”. Or as Mr. Busy said more than once this week, “ you haven’t brought your A-Game!”  That’s a nice way to say I screwed up several things.  Just an example, I spent several times on my tablet searching for ScrapHappy Saturday posts yesterday! OMG!😳 😱 😆

I’ve just been “half a bubble off”, another of Mr. Busy’s way of telling me I’m not up to par! 🙃

I sewed all my orange RSC blocks at a mini  retreat the first week in August.  I worked on my crumb blocks some,

and made 3 Leader and Ender blocks for this newest Bonnie Hunter L&E Challenge, County Clare.

Upper right are pieces ready to sew. I don’t have 1.5” strips or squares cut, so it’s slower process for me than BH!

Went to funeral on Wednesday and there is another today. Hoping the coming week is an improvement on this week. In all my endeavors, from sewing to making a grocery order, to getting ready for guests this weekend. Oy vey!

I Like Thus 8-15

I LIKE Thursday, sharing with LeeAnna and others at Not Afraid of Color.

I found the above quote on the internet this week. It’s perfect for me. I’m having trouble with documenting and even finding things to like or be grateful for.

I did receive these photos from my youngest granddaughter. She and her fiancé found quiet, beauty and time together on a short bicycle ride in their small town!

Don’t they look happy? Her tank says it all! Be The Light!

They also found this interesting fungi!

Another reason I’m down this week. I learned Monday of a friend’s death. We hadn’t been close recently, but I didn’t know she was sick. She was only 67!

But this opening sentence in her obituary made me smile. I edited her name. She was the Queen of Bling in our sorority!

AJH ( 01/09/1957 – 08/06/2024, has left this life to pursue a new career as Director of Bling, Shoes, Purses and Chocolate in Heaven

We watched a great movie on Disney this week.

I highly recommend it!

LeeAnna asked:

Aug 15, 2024

how are you coping with the heat dome this year?

It’s been hotter here than normal, but that’s not saying much. We only had one day over 100 degrees. Fall is on the way, there won’t be another. Luckily we have central air. This is the first home we have ever had that had that luxury. We have a full basement that we could retreat too, if the AC failed!  As I get older, I do better in the heat. Not the sun, but shady heat is OK! Just as long as I have a glass of iced tea, I’m a happy girl!  I’m cold most of the time these days!

Slow Sunday Stitching! 8-11-24

I’m joining with friends at  Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitching today. Not a lot of stitching progress here. But it’s not so much the destination as the journey for me. Don’t get me wrong, I get excited to finish a stitchery, but the fun is in the doing!

I started on the Woven Wreath’s  Sun for August, last week, but did not finish. I attended a 3 day Sew-In or Mini Retreat. Meet and sew and visit and share for 3 days in a row. But sleep in your own bed at home. It’s very popular! I did some block construction.

Not quite 1/2 way with the Sun, but getting there. Stitched Saturday night while watching a new Apple+ movie. The Instigators with Matt Damon, Casey Affleck. Several other faces and names you will recognize, Hong Chau, Ving Rhames, Paul Michael Hauber and Ron Perlman to name a few. But sadly, no recommendation from either of us!

I was disappointed. I like these guys and wish I would have liked the movie!

Today I will continue the Sun. There are lots of stitches necessary in this small design. Very cute though, isn’t it?

Hopefully I’ll get some stitches in the Temperatures Heart. I’m woefully behind on this one.

Scrap Happy Saturday 8-10-24

I attended a Sleep In Your Own Bed retreat this week hosted by a group I belong to called LooseThreads! We met Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in a large meeting room at our local library. We invited other sewing groups to join us. Some Thursday Stitchers and Material Girls attended. Several people were out of town or working at the Pathfinders Camporee. We had 60,000 campers and staff visited our small city. Almost double our population.

A drone photo of one of their evening assemblies. It was an amazing thing to see.

I managed to sew all 8 of my orange Split 9 blocks and 4 zipper blocks. There were 5, but the fifth had an oops, so it was unsewn and will be remedied today.

I often don’t cut well with others, and this is a prime example. Luckily there was another piece of the dotted fabric that was long enough to cut a 9 1/2” strip! Phew!

And scrappy crumb blocks were started. They will be used in the Table Scraps Challenge for August!

I’m joining other scrappy sew-ers at Angela’s ScrapHappy Saturday!
