December’24 Table Scraps Challenge ~~ Rainbow and Pluses

 

It’s the end of the year. The prompts from The Joyful Quilter for December were Rainbow and Pluses.

I would have liked to make a small plus quilt for a table runner or wall hanging. But we left home on Dec 6th to spend the holidays with our son. So no sewing machine! I did bring hand stitching…and I had been doing counted cross stitch at home. There were scraps of Aida fabric and a variety of floss colors on my cutting/ sorting table. 

Cross stitches are basically pluses on point! 😉  It is not yet a quilted item but I promise there will be quilting stitches when I get home to my batting and fabric!

My plan is to frame it and give it to my 8 year old great granddaughter. Her mom and dad, mostly Mom, repainted her room this summer. I think she will love the idea of us being BFFs. 

Looking forward to doing this challenge again in 2025. My scrap stash continues to grow and this challenge stretches my imagination!

Table Scraps Challenge ~~~Trees , Any Color! 11-24

November color and idea prompt was presented by Joyful in her post dated October 25th.. Maker’s Choice for color and trees . I needed a Christmasy something for my guest bathroom. I had a blue towel but it had couple of rough spots. So I appliqued some trees. 

As I was thinking about this little scrappy project I was wondering what to use for tree patterns! I don’t think I have one in my cookie cutters. There were some quilt patterns on line. But I didn’t really want to buy a pattern just for this .  I was putting borders on a long ago UFO. 

Do you see what I see? 

A trio of Christmas trees. I opened the pattern pack and set to tracing the shapes on some wonder under. 

UM-M…..the pattern has some X’s that represent stars at the top of each tree. I didn’t add those on the quilt!  🙃 Well, it’s still a flimsy so I can fix that!

Table Scraps Challenge.

 

And

It’s the last weekend for October! You know what that means!  Table Scraps Projects are ready to be revealed. As I have done for all of 2024, I used my scraps in the color of the month. October’s color was light neutral, or browns. I did have lots of light scraps. I used some in my split nines. 

SOME of the rest were used to make crumb blocks. I didn’t really know where they were going. But because the prompt from  The Joyful Quilter was Cats….I had a thought. I checked my pattern notebooks. Some ideas were there. I checked the internet. Cat faces were there. I tried to draw my own! Oh my, where are the kids coloring books when you need them. I finally settled on Plan A 1.2! I watched videos!  

I downloaded this free pattern, then enlarged it to 125%.

I cut out a cat face from fusible interfacing and crumb fabric 2x.

I chose kitty paw print fabric for the back and cut two. How do I know these are kitty prints? The salvage says so! 

Two CUTE CAT COASTERS!   Back and front.

I topstitched around the outside edge after I turned and pressed them. Lots of seam allowances in crumb fabric. Sometimes it makes a mess on the underside! 😕  

Coasters for my Sunday morning coffee. You can’t have too many coasters!

Table Scraps Challenge ~ Dark (Brown or Black) 🍁 🍂 Leaves!

 

The Joyful Quilter hosts The Table Scraps Challenge and uses the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color as a jumping off point. Joyful also gives us a prompt each month! September is Leaves. 

As usual, I made crumb fabric with my table scraps and used a long long resident of a scrap drawer! I have lots of brown, tan, darkish colors in my fall basket! One year, many Christmases ago, my son and then-daughter-in-law gave me a Christmas themed tray with 18 fat quarters of browns , individually wrapped so they looked like a tray of brownies! It was a fabulous gift! 

A small square table topper that fits pretty well on  the table next to my rocker. 

The light green- gray leaf was a freebie from Connecting Threads years ago, announcing their die cuts. I used it as a pattern to cut the brown one, then appliqued them both to the crumb block. No binding on this one. Just layered and turned, then top stitched around the edge. Easy peasy!

Scrap Happy Saturday 8-10-24

 

I attended a Sleep In Your Own Bed retreat this week hosted by a group I belong to called LooseThreads! We met Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in a large meeting room at our local library. We invited other sewing groups to join us. Some Thursday Stitchers and Material Girls attended. Several people were out of town or working at the Pathfinders Camporee. We had 60,000 campers and staff visited our small city. Almost double our population.

I managed to sew all 8 of my orange Split 9 blocks and 4 zipper blocks. There were 5, but the fifth had an oops, so it was unsewn and will be remedied today. 

I often don’t cut well with others, and this is a prime example. Luckily there was another piece of the dotted fabric that was long enough to cut a 9 1/2” strip! Phew! 

And scrappy crumb blocks were started. They will be used in the Table Scraps Challenge for August!

Scrap Happy Saturday July 27

 

Wow! Summer is coming to an end. I hate that statement! My achy old knees and hips like the warm. Of course this week it has been more like summer than earlier. Thursday it was 105 F officially. Then Friday it cooled off to  86 F. 

This week I  worked on two different aqua quilted items . My One Monthly Goal is this cute little baby/kids quilt with Princess Jasmine. It is quilted and bound ready to go to the donation box. 

Then my Table Scraps Challenge entry that required aqua and butterflies. Or one butterfly to be correct.

I like the gingham on the back!

My evening stitching included some dark aqua or teal!

This is a slow stitch, but I am enjoying it.

Two for One

Or more precisely, one project for two different memes!

I enjoy participating in The Joyful Quilter’s Monthly Table Scraps Challenge and Alycia Quilt’s weekly Finished or Not Friday.

 May’s RSC color was pink. As I have all year,  I sewed scraps of the monthly color, sometimes my scraps used a pattern, sometimes into crumb blocks. Using Joyful’s theme prompt Kentucky Derby, I struggled. My pinks went together slowly. No photos, I was struggling. I’m a city girl. I’ve never liked horses! Some girls go through a horse phase around 8-12 yo. Not me. They frightened me!  But, I like hats! 👒 I considered a big floppy girly hat. That would have been awesome if I lived on the East Coast and there was a possibility of attending the Kentucky Derby! But I live in Wyoming!  A cowboy hat would have been wrong, so I appliqued a Derby shape on my table topper. I quilted a 1 inch grid diagonally, zigzaged the brown derbies and bound it with the same fabric as the back. Done!

The derby is a image from the internet.

And so I have a finish. A pink crumb table topper with brown derbies will be used on my side table this summer.

Midweek and Mid Month Table Scraps for April!

Or Bit Past Mid Month 

I have been in my sewing room.....lots of smallish starts and finishes. 

Some of you may remember the crumb project I mentioned early in the month.  It ended up being 36 X 24.

I have a fairly new AccuQuilt Go Big cutter. This is what it looks like all closed up. 

It has a premade cover that is of a loosely woven white fabric and it fits very tight. I think, every time I try to put it on, that I am going to break a seam open or worse yet stick my finger through the fabric. 

 So I decided to make a cover for it that would fit it closed or open. Mr Busy and I share two rooms in the basement that were originally bedrooms.  He builds with balsa wood. Lots of sawing and sanding. Lots of sawdust etc. I have a cover for my machine and the cutter needed one too.  The crumb slab ( scraps from my cutting table and some donated wedges from a friend) was backed with a very ugly striped sheet. Quilted with my go-to serpentine stitch, but no batting. It is flimsy but not heavy. Then bound in yellow, of course. 

It's got plenty of hang over when the cutter is closed.!

And it covers it completely when it is open. It could have been a bit shorter. But too big is better than not big enough, right?

And a closer look at the square on the front. It's a Yellow Duck walking in the April Rain with a green and Yellow Umbrella.

It's a pattern from Shabby Fabrics from several years ago. It was meant for wool rug mats, but worked as a regular applique piece too. 

So I am entering this as my challenge piece for April Yellow Table Scraps Challenge with an Umbrella!!    I will link up with The Joyful Quilter on the 26th of the month when Joy posts her link up party. 

I should probably try to make a few more zipper blocks for April’s 🌼🌼 RSC color, before the month is over.  I have a large quilt to get to the quilter. There will be a post about that on Friday.
