Scrap Happy Saturday 8-10-24

 

I attended a Sleep In Your Own Bed retreat this week hosted by a group I belong to called LooseThreads! We met Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in a large meeting room at our local library. We invited other sewing groups to join us. Some Thursday Stitchers and Material Girls attended. Several people were out of town or working at the Pathfinders Camporee. We had 60,000 campers and staff visited our small city. Almost double our population.

I managed to sew all 8 of my orange Split 9 blocks and 4 zipper blocks. There were 5, but the fifth had an oops, so it was unsewn and will be remedied today. 

I often don’t cut well with others, and this is a prime example. Luckily there was another piece of the dotted fabric that was long enough to cut a 9 1/2” strip! Phew! 

And scrappy crumb blocks were started. They will be used in the Table Scraps Challenge for August!

Table Scraps Challege Butterfly using RSC’s Aqua

 

Joy gave us the prompt of Butterfly!  Angela selected Aqua as this month Rainbow color. Hmmm? 

Most of my project for TSC this year have used Crumb Blocks. So can I do a butterfly using Crumbs? Of course I can! 

So, I built crumb blocks from the aqua scraps on my cutting table and some from the scrap basket. As I made these 8 Split Nine Blocks , 

I sewed scraps!

As I stitched these zipper blocks

I sewed crumbs into blocks.  

Then I spied Nancy’s blocks for RSC! She is sewing butterflies. Using a free pattern from Robert  Kauffman called Hope Takes Flight! ..  imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?

I cannot do a quilt in two weeks, but I sure can do a placemat or two. An employee at a LQS is organizing a sew-in to make placemats for Meals on Wheels. So now I have a donation location! 😃

Shoot!!  I didn’t get any photos of the process. But it was trial and error. Measure and cut and sew. Some frankenbatting and a useable piece of aqua and white gingham for the backing then layered and ready to quilt. I used my favorite serpentine stitch on my machine in  diagonal rows in the main part of the placemat , then horizontally in the floral parts. There is some straight line stitching around the butterfly. 

I finished stitching the binding down on Thursday at my stitching group. So this is the Table Scraps Challenge entry for July. I’m linking up with The Joyful Quilter today. The last weekend of the month is always the due date for Table Scraps Challenge. 

Can you see the crumb winged butterfly or “flutterby” as my son always said when he was little! Does she need antenna?

Scrap Happy Saturday. First Aqua blocks

 Luckily there was some sewing this week

I had a goal of 4 Split 9 blocks! But the parts for eight blocks were cut and on my sewing table, so why not? 

I also finally cut one inch 😳 sashing pieces to make a trial block called Square Pegs! In the event you can’t tell it’s a Bonnie Hunter pattern! 🙂 I struggle with little pieces! What was I thinking? Do I need new glasses? A better 1/4” guide? Yikes!

I'm going to have to redo that bottom row. My verticals are way!!!! off! 😖

Then I set a One Monthly Goal for July! I failed April and May, though I finally did get the shower curtain finished and hung up. June I was just lazy! My OMG for July has some aqua, I will quilt this small quilt!

ScrapHappy Saturday. June 15th

 

I'm joining Angela and friends for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, and spreading a bit of blue cheer. 

Last week I showed you three blue Split Nine Blocks. They are still on the design wall and have been joined by a 4th Split 9 and 4 zipper blocks. Since I am using both light and dark blues I think I will make 4 more blue zipper blocks. and four more split nines before the end of June. Hopefulluy!  Still no "set in stone" plan for how these blocks will go, but I'll need more than 4 each I'm sure. 

I spent some of this week, trying to make a backing for a small child's quilt.It will be scrappy. Come back next week to see how I did!!

ScrapHappy Saturday

 

Just trying to rev up my blues. I have a light blue scrap bucket and a dark blue scrap bucket. So finding blue shouldn’t be a problem. I sewed 3 split nine blocks, cut pieces for 1 more and also for some zipper blocks. I’m mixing dark and light in my blocks.

I started stitching the June design on Woven Wreaths. I like this watering can with baby’s breath in it. The little bee is a tiny stitch. But Kathy has some great tips in her YouTube tutorial for completing the bee. I’ll get him done today, or finish him tomorrow while watching CBS Sunday Morning. I want to look at the tutorial one more time before doing the bee.

I caught whatever it was that Mr. Busy had last week. I call it a summer cold. Headache, runny nose, some aches and pains that are relieved by Tylenol. And a scratchy throat that feels better when I drink my Hot Spiced Tea. I used to call it Russian Tea, but now it’s just Spiced Tea. 🫖 So not much was accomplished, but I got several naps! 💤

I don’t add sugar at all. I like the pucker of the lemonade flavor. When this recipe was given to me you could buy Wyler’s Lemonade in packets like KoolAid. Now I buy a canister of CountryTime Lemonade and a canister of Tang and just make a batch at a time.

Scrap Happy Saturday Pink’s Goodbye

I had to smile ! My post title made me think of this famous P¡nk!

But she’s not saying goodbye anytime soon. 

 I haven’t sewn any pink in recent weeks. I have 7 pink zipper blocks and  8 pink split nine patch blocks finished. Not sure what my final plan is, but I don’t want anymore orphan blocks. So when I settle on a pattern, I’ll add to the colors I need. 

Mr Busy and I  got the grommets in the “shower curtain”. There is some “pink” in the top of that project. 

In looking forward to the new color for June, BLUE!

Rainbow Scrap Challenge. April Last Yellow

Linking up with Angela for the last Saturday in April!

I did add two more yellow Zipper blocks to my collection.

All my yellow contributions:

5 Split 9 Patches and 5 Zipper blocks.  I'm not sure how many I will need of each so there may be more made, when I decide on a layout. Or there might be extras!

Can you find Big Bird's head and those smiley faces that I can't seem to use up!  LOL!

You might wonder why the pink one. It's got tiny little flowers in yellow and I like it!!

The only other yellow in my life this week except for the sunshine, which I am thankful for, was this lovely bouquet of flowers given to me by Mr. Busy after a medical procedure on Tuesday.

Scrappy Happy Saturday ~ some more purple

I thought I made enough Split Nine blocks. And I made 4 zipper blocks. But as I was sorting through the scraps to find crumb block bits I ran across this and made a 5th zipper block! Too pretty not to include!

My crumbs added up to a slab about 18”  by 8”. It turned into a thread catcher.

Whose hands are those? 

And I used some purple in a sweet baby quilt. This is a pattern I won during Project Quilting, from Sarah Goer quilts. It’s called Back and Forth. And now all but an uneven strip of the Princess Jasmine fabric is  gone! 

I have some pieces cut for a different quilt with some HOT Wheels for the focus fabric!  Vroom!

ScrapHappy Saturday ~ 3-9-24

The second Saturday in March. The purple scraps were pulled to see if I could make some Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks. Of course I could! The scrap dilemma is real! 

Six Split Nines were finished 

And 4 Zipper Blocks were added to the basket. 

I also completed the Project Quilting challenge of Wearables! 

They too are purplish! Well, there are lots of colors in these “jammy pants”, but some bluish pinky purple!

In fact, the center 2.5” square in the top right Split 9 is a scrap from the “wearable” sewing!

I’m also trying to make some crumb blocks, but so far just parts!
