Slow Sunday Stitching End of July

What’s better than starting your day with your journal, a hot cup of Black Silk and avocado toast?

Joining Slow Sunday Stitching at Kathy’s Quilts that’s what!

Even though this week had some project quilting and finishing in the sewing room there was still time for some slow stitching.

I sewed the binding down by hand on Thursday at my stitching group’s gathering. Did I take any photos? Nope, nada! But they are done.

This placemat for donation to our local Meals on Wheels.

And this “rolled up so you can see the lavender binding” glamor shot of the kid’s  quilt! Also for donation!

Today I’m stitching on the Winter SAL from Stitchonomy!  I finished the Bright Stars row. Now I’ll work on Warm Mittens. A trip to Hobby Lobby yesterday to pick up 2 of the called for colors that I didn’t have. DMC 3766 and DMC 3809!  How can that be? I have three and a half boxes of floss on bobbins! I think these are newer DMC colors and my stash is ancient! Like me.

And I hope to get the Temperature Heart caught up through the end of July. We had 1 day that hit 105 F this week! Unusual!

Scrap Happy Saturday July 27

Wow! Summer is coming to an end. I hate that statement! My achy old knees and hips like the warm. Of course this week it has been more like summer than earlier. Thursday it was 105 F officially. Then Friday it cooled off to  86 F.

This week I  worked on two different aqua quilted items . My One Monthly Goal is this cute little baby/kids quilt with Princess Jasmine. It is quilted and bound ready to go to the donation box.

Then my Table Scraps Challenge entry that required aqua and butterflies. Or one butterfly to be correct.

You can read my challenge post HERE

I like the gingham on the back!

My evening stitching included some dark aqua or teal!

This is a slow stitch, but I am enjoying it.

Looking forward to our new color and different scraps ! Linking up with Angela at Scrap Happy Saturday!

Table Scraps Challege Butterfly using RSC’s Aqua

Joy gave us the prompt of Butterfly!  Angela selected Aqua as this month Rainbow color. Hmmm?

Most of my project for TSC this year have used Crumb Blocks. So can I do a butterfly using Crumbs? Of course I can!

So, I built crumb blocks from the aqua scraps on my cutting table and some from the scrap basket. As I made these 8 Split Nine Blocks ,

I sewed scraps!

As I stitched these zipper blocks

I sewed crumbs into blocks.

Then I spied Nancy’s blocks for RSC! She is sewing butterflies. Using a free pattern from Robert  Kauffman called Hope Takes Flight! ..  imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?

I cannot do a quilt in two weeks, but I sure can do a placemat or two. An employee at a LQS is organizing a sew-in to make placemats for Meals on Wheels. So now I have a donation location! 😃

Shoot!!  I didn’t get any photos of the process. But it was trial and error. Measure and cut and sew. Some frankenbatting and a useable piece of aqua and white gingham for the backing then layered and ready to quilt. I used my favorite serpentine stitch on my machine in  diagonal rows in the main part of the placemat , then horizontally in the floral parts. There is some straight line stitching around the butterfly.

I finished stitching the binding down on Thursday at my stitching group. So this is the Table Scraps Challenge entry for July. I’m linking up with The Joyful Quilter today. The last weekend of the month is always the due date for Table Scraps Challenge.

Can you see the crumb winged butterfly or “flutterby” as my son always said when he was little! Does she need antenna?

The back! Who doesn’t love gingham?

Finished or Not Friday.

It’s the last Friday of July! What does that mean? It’s time to show your projects. Finished or Not!  I’m linking up with Alycia at Quilty Girl for her round up of finishes.

This little Princess Jasmine quilt is all ready to await the arrival of her brother ( Eat My Dust) in the donation box.

You can read more about this quilt and the pattern in my post about my One Monthly Goal.

Quilted and trimmed!
A peek at the back!

And it’s bound! In lavender. Go me!

July 2024 One Monthly Goal is complete.

You can read about my July OMG here!

And check on other OMGers at Stories from the Sewing Room. Finally an OMG Finish!

Princess Jasmine is quilted and trimmed. Awaiting my decision on a binding fabric and a small label. It will be donated along with its brother, Eat My Dust!

The pattern, called Back and Forth, was designed by Sarah Goer and donated as a prize in Project Quilting 15! I was a lucky winner of one of Sarah’s patterns during week 15.4.

It’s fun to use up these novelty pieces that were donated to me by the family of a friend after her passing.

Hanging on the fence! In the warm sunshine! It’s 93F!

A photo of the back of the quilt. In the shade on the back deck. Some more donation fabric from my friend!

I LIKE Thursday 7-25-24

Every once in a while, something shows up on Facebook that makes you sit up and take notice! In a good way! I wasn’t familiar with the name John Ortberg, so I looked him up. There is some controversy in his personal life. But I still think this quote is worth thinking about.

John Carl Ortberg Jr. (born May 5, 1957) is an American evangelicalChristian author, speaker, and the former senior pastor of Menlo Church[1] in Menlo Park, California, an ECO Presbyterian church with more than 4,000 members.

Gratitude is difficult for me. It shouldn’t be!

It’s been hazy and very smoky lately. It seems the whole continent is on fire. The sun was bright red-orange as it was setting on Sunday evening.this photo doesn’t do it justice at all. I tried.

Saturday I wanted salad for supper. We do salads often in the summer. I had 3 chicken tenders in the freezer. I thawed them, then when they were still a bit frosty, I tenderized them . I have a Pampered Chef tenderizer! Do you?

I seasoned them with some Fajita Seasoning from Penzey’s , added 1 tbls olive oil and three tablespoons lime juice to a small glass dish and marinated for 20 minutes. 4 minutes on the grill and they were done. Sliced thinly, some shredded, they topped a serving of Avocado Ranch bagged salad . Actually only about 2/3 of one tender per serving. I added regular ranch dressing, some red grapes and Ritz Crisps. Yum-O!

The leftovers made chicken salad for lunch the next day.

My tomato plants are beginning to make tomatoes! That always makes me happy!

I have 3 pots in front of the garage. They get good hot sunshine there. I am careful about watering them daily, sometimes twice a day. Today is predicted to be a high of 103 and windy! I may move them to the side of the garage today only.

I bought this hanging basket of petunias at Home Depot in June. I put them on the back deck, the north side of our house. They hated it there. So I deadheaded the spent blossoms, bought a large pot, and just set them into the pot. On the south side of the house. Much better!

LeeAnna asked this question today!

do you like roadtrips in the summer? tell us about one you've taken

We used to take lots of road trips. After our kids were adults and had moved out of the house we bought a Honda Gold Wing motorcycle. We had the best times on that Honda. We traveled around the US. Lots of states we missed, but we were in Glacier National Park in Montana,  Spokane WA, Albuquerque NM, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. We traveled to Niagara Falls, took a ferry across Lake Michigan, all over most of South Dakota and Wyoming. Several years we rode with a group to Medora,  North Dakota to attend the Medora Musical. If you get a chance to do that, do it! So I told you about lots of trips, not just one. 🤣

Guess I’ve bent your ear long enough. Go to Not Afraid of Color to see other I Like Thursday posts.

Slow Sunday Stitching 7-21-24

Come join us with some quiet easy slow stitching at Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitching

New start: last week I hinted at a new start. I took the fabric , the thread, the chart to my stitching group. It may have been a mistake. I’m a stitcher who almost always starts in the middle. I found the horizontal middle of the fabric. Then the vertical middle. Perfect! Right? The first motif I stitched , an acorn, I stitched 4 rows instead of three. I decided not to unstitch, but to make an adjustment later if it needs to be.

The beginning of the second U in Autumn.

The  circled in green area is where my mistake is. The are 4 thread color changes there. I think I can make it work. It not, I’ll unstitch it later. I was visiting instead of counting! 🤨

This is the week that has the 25th in it. Therefore, I’ll stitch on this Winter SAL….MAYBE THE winter like images will make me feel cooler

I really want to make progress on this! Wish me luck.

Scrap Happy Saturday

Joining with other makers for Rainbow Scrap Challenge. RSC is hosted by Angela from Super Scrappy!

This will link you to Angela’s home page. As soon as I see that she has posted her Linky Party , I’ll correct the link! It’s early here and I have watering and dead heading to do before it gets hot!🥵😀

The first three zipper blocks! So many shades and hues of Aqua!

The last 2 zipper blocks. Total of 5.

I’ve been sewing other aqua but you will have to wait for Table Scraps Challenge reveal. It’s not quite finished!

Finished or Not Friday 7-19-24

I’m inspired by all the “shares” on Alycia’s Finished or Not Friday!   Don’t you just love her Goofy Geese? You all are amazing. I have been making starts, but not finishes.

There were scraps made into zipper blocks, and scraps turned into crumb blocks.

And I tried a block from BH Addicted to Scraps column from an old Quiltmaker magazine. Hers was scrappy RW and Blue! I liked it better than my version.

And my cutting table exploded!

So I guess my Finish today will be to straighten up my sewing room and work on my entry into the Table Scraps Challenge. I’m almost there! Next week I’ll have a finish!
