The Joyful Quilter hosts this monthly challenge to use up table scraps. Not the food kind, but the fabric and sewing stuff kind! Each month this year, in addition to using the color of the month selected at Rainbow Scrap Challenge over at So Scrappy, Joyfull gave us a monthly prompt. This month was light green and "Joyful"!!
Well, it was October and I had some Halloween fabric pieces. One fat quarter in particular was one I was pretty sure I would never use in a quilt. Very colorful, very novelty, very graphic.
But when I thought about it and thought about two of the great grandkids being here this year. .....Well, I started thinking about treats. We don't have many Trick or Treaters. But we always buy more candy than we give away and none of us need the extra. So why not make sure the great grands have a special little bag of more than one piece and maybe a special cookie or other treat!
I cut two strips of the fat quarter 4.5" by 11". Turned down and stitched a hem on both short end of the strip. Then I found a piece of orange grosgrain ribbon in my stash. Decided to put their initials on the bag, cause they are 6 and 9 and Miss B thinks everything cute is hers! I cut free hand block letters on a piece of scrap freezer paper, then turned them over and traced on the paper side of a scrap of fusible Wonder Under.
Ironed them down to a scrap of black fabric, cut them out and fused them to the "front" of each strip. Then blanket stitched around the letter before making the strip into a bag. I use a used dryer sheet at a stabilizer behind most applique.

Cut away the excess dryer sheet fabric, folded right sides together matching the hemmed edge. I folded the ribbon in half, put the fold inside the seam allowance, making sure I wouldn't catch the ends then stitched down both long sides and turned right side. out.
So here is the finished product. Technically not quilted, but there are three layers, stitched together. Black applique fabric, main orange plaid fabric and the used dryer sheet! Ok, artistic license?? Maybe?
There is not a bit of green ( oh, there is a green pumpkin stem, and green witch nose, heh, heh!) in this project but Jojo and Miss B definitely make me Joyful!! And I had fun whipping up these treat bags, from scraps of fabric, and ribbon and scraps of used dryer sheets.
So this is my entry to the Table Scraps Challenge for October 2022. Now to fill them with small treasures, candy, maybe a special cookie! Happy Halloween everyone. Trick or Treat!!!๐
