Another Scrap Basket to add to the crowd!

I finally had some time to sew. I’ve been working at using up my previously made crumb blocks to make scrap baskets. I decided  late , so I started in early May with that month's color - Dark Green. 

Then I decided to continue because I have the crumb blocks, or most of them and will go back and catch up with the other month's colors. Joy from The Joyful Quilter commented on my May 9th post that she too needed a dark green basket. So I challenged her. She came through. See her post here. In fact she went an extra mile and did a "bigger boat". See that post.

 January..Light or Bright Green.  Finished May 22nd

And February..Orange. Finished  May 24th

Next was Teal for March.  I sort of went lighter, toward aqua and turquoise. 

I posted about this on May 29th. And that's when Joy made a comment, that I needed to make a light blue one. She already had a light blue one, but needed a dark blue one.  And sort of threw down a gauntlet!  I responded that I did already have a light blue one on deck but would meet her challenge of a dark blue one plus a pink one to be done by the end of June.  (June's color is PINK!)

and just finished Tuesday afternoon....a dark blue one. 

Now, Angela has not selected a month for dark blue and maybe she won't. But if she does, I'll be ready and of course I will do a geese migration block and some hollow 9-patches too. 

This week, I had to opportunity to pick up what I thought was a just box of old jeans from a friend to give to another friend. When I arrived at Kari's garage, she also had a whole tote of fabric. Purple on top.....I can't resist purple, so I came home with yards and yards of fabric. Some good, lots really good and most in pieces big enough for partial backing. Don't tell Mr. Busy... he thinks I'm trying to downsize!!!!

I'm beginning my pink sewing this week and will continue to the end of June. I purchased 2 1-yard pieces of two different shades of pink solid, for the geese migration blocks. I am always short of solids and have none in the pink and yellow range. Well, now I have pink, but no yellow solid.

It’s Saturday! I should have some pink hollow 9 patches done, or at least one Geese Migration block complete!  I'm linking this post to ScrapHappy Saturday over at Angela's blog. 

But nope... I needed to finish this small baby quilt for Jack’s Basket so that was my focus during the week.

The quilting on this little "lovie" is from a panto named Promise!  I think its a perfect name for this quilt too!  

This shows the quilting my friend Marva did and the dark binding I found in a drawer!  It matches the fabric in the center square!  Score!!!   Oh, and look! This is might be the last of the Winnie the Pooh fabric!!

I might have done some sewing yesterday, but I took some time to put a few flowers in a small raised bed . I asked Mr Busy to turn on the water to the outside spigots. He did. I finished the plantings and watered them.

Then I went in the house to get some chicken out of the freezer for dinner. We have a extra freezer in the basement. Yikes!! there was water on the floor in my laundry room. And lots of water in the closet next to it. That’s where the water line comes into the house and it was dripping a steady stream. I hurried upstairs to call out to hubby and then back down to start picking some things up off the floor. You can imagine that the next hours were filled with moving wet stuff out of the closet. Using the shop vac to vacuum up excess water and general cleanup! Whew! We were tired! 

Next week, I’m downsizing yet again!   Getting rid of some of that closet stuff. We don’t entertain any more. I don’t need a chip and dip bowl set from the 60s! Or a potato ricer! Or a punch bowl!  You get the idea!

Finished or Not Friday 6/5/20

 

 I’m not fond of mending. But I put a quick hem in the sleeves of an old denim shirt. I’m not fond of squaring up a quilt and attaching the binding! Even on a small baby quilt. But I did that too, this week. This little “Lovie” will be sent off to Jack’s Basket! I auditioned a couple of different fabrics for the binding. I thought it needed a darker contrasting binding since the outside edges are light. I even looked through the drawers of a forgotten little chest behind my sewing machine. I found a large piece of the dark purple that is in the center block! “Jackpot”! And I like it a lot.

Do you put a label on a donation quilt! I know that there are restrictions for QOV donations. I’ll check the Jack’s Basket website before I go further.

The backing is pieced, as almost all of my backings are these days! The pink is just tone on tone leaves, but the print is Cabbage Patch Kids. With pink hearts. I had already used some of this print, and there was just a chunk left, but the pinks were great together.

June 2020 OMG Setting Post

June is here!  Today , June 2nd, Mr. Busy and I celebrate our 56th Wedding Anniversary! Celebrate may be a stretch! Last year we went out to dinner and went to a movie. The pandemic has kept us mostly at home. Although the restaurants are open as of yesterday in our small city..we will stay home. I did not plan a special dinner meal! My sister says I should have!

Maybe we will order pizza and watch a few more episodes of Sweet Magnolias. We are both enjoying that series!

Back to my OMG for this month!
Last October I pieced this scrappy red,white,and blue star.

My goal, is a small one! Turn this small piece into a pillow for the 4th of July! It's really not small for a pillow, it's 20" X 20"

I’ll need to quilt the top, make a backing, and bind it! I have a whole bin of R,W,B fabrics!

I’m not sure, but I think I’ll use a zippered back!  If I have the correct size zipper or have the time and the inclination to shop for one.

Some scrappy happiness and other sewing

I'm writing my post late.  I had hoped to get another basket finished. But I did not.

This is as far as it is this morning.

Light blue, quilted and cut to size. The handle is on the one end piece. Ready to go together.

This little scrappy quilt came back from the quilter.  Love the pantograph she used. It's called Promise. I don't know the designer.  I love it flowers and hearts. And the name speaks to the life this quilt will have. I am donating to Jack's Basket! The binding is cut. I'll get it on today or tomorrow.

And a bit of a "squirrel" came about yesterday. My middle granddaughter texted and asked me if I would make her a face mask. She lives in Phoenix and has just secured a job with Amazon. Funny story...I asked her earlier if she needed masks. She declined, saying she had a box of disposable ones. But her son, who will be 10 in July would like one. She allows him to play Xbox on line, but only if his face is covered. So that was fine with me...I sent one to him and included a little pink one for his 3 yo sister. I know how sisters are...if brother has one, she needs one!
Now that Mom needs a mask at work, she wanted a handmade one. Better than the disposable she says, but was reluctant to ask, since she had turned me down earlier.  Her dad, our son, said, " Call Grandma! I'm sure she will be glad to!"  He was right, of course.  Cause that's what we as grandmothers do!  I was tickled pink!!

So these are cut out and ready to sew. I'll send them priority mail on Monday, she'll have them on Tuesday.  Just in time to start her job on Thursday!. One is purple with a grey lining, one is aqua flowers with a red lining, and one is coffee beans with a pale yellow lining. The red lining is interfaced with SF101,  the fabric is a bit light and not so tightly woven. I'm now out of elastic cord, a bit of flat 1/4" elastic is left and I have cut t-shirt yarn for the halter style ties.  I'm wondering if the t-shirt yarn has enough elasticity and hold to use in an ear loop. I may try one for myself. I haven't ventured out to Joann's or Hobby Lobby. They just opened up here in our county and I'm in the at -risk category. I have not gone out except to pick up groceries and take out lunch once in a while.
Maybe I'll don a mask and go see how crowded they are.

Here in NE Wyoming we are pretty safe. No new cases in the last 10 days or so, in our county.  No deaths at all in our county. Only 2 of the 17 cases we did have, were hospitalized. So we have definitely flattened the curve. In fact, when they weren't doing elective surgeries, our county hospital cut wages, furloughed nurses and even furloughed some traveling doctors. The CEO did not take his pay for the balance of the fiscal year.

Well, this turned into a long blah blah blah post.  Sorry.  It looks like Angela has given us Junes new color.....PINK!  So I will get busy on my pink basket, pink Geese Migration blocks and pink hollow nine patches.  I'm linking this post to ScrapHappy Saturday.

Finished another Whoop Whoop

Well, this is my mindless sewing lately. You all know I made 2 green scrap baskets, and last week an orange one. This week ,in an effort to get caught up on the rainbow colors for 2020, I tackled teal/aqua/turquoise! My crumb blocks were already done. I only had to add a little bit to one slab to make it big enough.

Then I looked for lining fabric. I can’t stand to use fabric I might need sometime for a utilitarian application like lining! I know, I know ! It’s just fabric! I had some small chunks of some Winnie the Pooh fabric left over from this baby quilt.

This was my 2nd Great Grandson's New Baby quilt!

I’ve used it several other places.

This went to Jack's Basket last year!

 In fact, I gave some away to a friend and she returned the leftovers! So these were the last of it. I pieced and puzzled to get 2 pieces 10.5 x 7.5, and  2 pieces 7.5 x 7.5. I couldn't get the bottom piece. So, I cut 2 bottom pieces, one outside, one inside from a large multi floral.

This is all that is left of it now!  1 2" strip, 2-  2.5" strip, 10 2" squares and some skinny strips that will go into my basket to make a crocheted rug!  Whoop Whoop !


I quilted the slab blocks with a serpentine stitch running vertically. I had a scrap piece of fusible batting that had a flaw. It was lapped over and fused by almost 3 inches. When I discovered it in another project, I put it in my scrap stash thinking I’d use it in mug rugs or something. It works here.

So another basket done. And 3 plastic shoe boxes are empty. I still need to make a light blue one and of course there will be a new color for June! So 2 more on the horizon.

OMG May and OMG Finish

May has really been an Oh My Gosh month! Maybe finally there will be a lessening of the number of cases and deaths of this virus. We haven't had a new positive case in our county in 4 days and no death in our county at all.  Only 12 deaths total, but we are a low population state. Only 578,759. We are the least populated state in the US.
