What lessons from your childhood have most impacted your worldview?

This is a pretty thought provoking question. I was raised in the Methodist Church. My parents were charter members of the small neighborhood church that we attended. I know that my church family and the Sunday School lessons helped form my view of what the world should be. Love Thy Neighbor  meant just that! It didn’t matter if they were the same as us or different. Wish that was still how my neighbors behaved. 

Some other happenings. 

I cleaned a cupboard and found 3, nearly full containers of Poppy Seeds. I’m not sure how old the red and white tin is, but it says 75 c on the top. Oh, and I disposed of several spices that were very old!

I made a small baby quilt top. It’s not a quilt yet, but progress is progress. I’ve named it, “Eat My Dust!”

The blue novelty fabric has those words and others. 

This is another version of the Back and Forth pattern by Sarah Goer. 

And I’ll be stitching the binding on the quilt for my nephew. I picked it up on Wednesday and almost have it trimmed and ready. Actually Deanna at my LQS attached the binding, so all I have to do is hand stitch it down. 

I used a gingham piece and didn’t quite have enough. My nephew is a Science professor at the University of Minnesota, so I thought the black piece of math formulas would work! I need to make a label, finish the binding and get it in the mail!

Finished or Not Friday!

This week has been a total bust in the sewing room. Well, maybe not a total bust, but the only thing that happened is that I ironed 3 shirts and 10 pillowcases and got the pieces for my second Back and Forth child’s quilt on the hallway design wall. They are numbered but this is not exactly how they will end up. Definitely a Not Finished!!    I won this pattern during Project Quilting 15. It’s from Sara Goer and makes good use of kid themed novelty fabric. 

My basement hallway design wall is dark. It’s been a dark, rainy, dreary week. Apologies! 

On the bright side, my granddaughter and her family sent these, yesterday! Don’t they look pretty with my very busy and colorful hourglass runner?

To-Do Tuesday #80

 

I'm linking up with Linda at Texas Quilt Gal to keep track of my goals and in-progress projects. Heaven knows I need all the help I can get.  I seem to be "stirring my chaos" as my sister used to say!

Last week I hoped to:

1. Put together a top for donation  through H2H at Mini Retreat. ✅  

Ninja Friends, from this book! ↓ The pattern is called  Simple Gifts. It's a great book, recommended to me by Nancy at Grace and Peace Quilting. 

2. Finish posts for TSC (Table Scraps Challenge) and OMG(One Monthly Goal)  ✅ done…see here and here

3. Get one more Growing Up Odd block made and decide if 9 blocks plus sashing are ENOUGH! ✅

I completed the block on the lower left and decided that 9 blocks is not enough. Even though they are large, it would be a short square lap quilt and I'd like a more rectangular one. So I will make it one block bigger all around and then add an extra border top and bottom to get to a rectangle. I have lots of 2" square cut and bought enough fabric for sashing to make the original quilt size.  It's 90x90 or 5X5 blocks.

 But I'm getting tired of doing this block so 7 more it is!

4. Sew something else at Mini Retreat.✅ 

Odd pieces of flannel, pieced to make a backing for Ninja Friends.  Yes, it needs to be trimmed up!

Upcoming week~ March 1 - March 7

1. Cut batting for Ninja Friends and Chunky Churn Dash! 

2. Continue blocks for placemats in aqua and March color!

3. Use 2" squares as leader and enders to make the 9 patches for  Growing Up Odd ( I need 7 more blocks)

4. Watch for new color announcement from Angela at RSC2022 and technique/idea prompt announcement from Joyful at Table Scraps Challenge. edited: RSC2022 color for March is Yellow and Table Scrap’s prompt is Flowers! 

That should keep me out of trouble and maybe elevate my mood!

Finished or Not Finished Friday. August 28

 First of all Happy Birthday to my mama in Heaven. Golly gee, I am missing her lately! 

Ok, most of you already know this! I FINALLY have some finishes!

First.. the Winter Mystery that Alycia sponsored is done! 

Back from the long arm quilter and ready to be trimmed and binding applied. 

Binding is done.

Secondly...I made bowl cozies for our son at his new home. He had one, now he and A. will have 4 total.    

While I was at it I made 2 for Mr Busy and me! 

They still need topstitching around the top, but the wrong color thread is in my machine at the moment. 

And 5 masks were made from this panel! There are 10 kid graphics and 8 for adults. 

  

Two for the great grandkids. 

And one each for their mommy, daddy and yaya (grandma)!  As I was readying these for a photo, I realized I forgot the nose pieces. I'll add them before they get mailed. 

The "not finished" is this baby quilt of just scraps. It needs a border. I’m thinking a stripe. Blue and orange maybe.  I’m still looking...but I’m open for something else if it speaks to me. 

And I had a tiny DrEAMi yesterday.(Drop Everything and Make It)  While looking for a particular pattern I ran across this elastic and piece of fabric to make a bookmark. A scrap of interfacing, a quick seam around 3 sides, insert the loop of wide elastic and topstitching gives you a bookmark that holds the book closed. 

inserted at your stopping place and the elastic is looped around the book .

ScrapHappy Saturday End of July

I didn't really sew any more Dark Blue RSC20 projects this week. So I'm just going to recap. 

I've made six hollow 9 patches. 2 Geese Migrations blocks for my RSC 2020. 

1st 3 9 patches, 1 geese migrations and a couple of sample Easy Breezy blocks.

The second geese migration and 3 more hollow 9 patches. 

I did use some dark blue in the red, white and blue star block for Covered in Love. 

And then I added more Rails and Nines to my design wall. I am stumped as to how to proceed with this. I need to rearrange for color balance. Then try to decide if it needs sashings or just borders to bring it to a usable size.  In my mind it is too busy, but I always like it when someone else does the truly scrappy thing. I first saw these blocks on Treadlestitches blog. She added a border and it was fabulous. 

Maybe mine are too dis similar. I don't know. ??

There is some dark blue in these block too!  hahaha! 

I think I'm looking forward to August and a new color and maybe some new inspiration.  I need a finish!.

Finished or Not Friday 6/5/20

 

 I’m not fond of mending. But I put a quick hem in the sleeves of an old denim shirt. I’m not fond of squaring up a quilt and attaching the binding! Even on a small baby quilt. But I did that too, this week. This little “Lovie” will be sent off to Jack’s Basket! I auditioned a couple of different fabrics for the binding. I thought it needed a darker contrasting binding since the outside edges are light. I even looked through the drawers of a forgotten little chest behind my sewing machine. I found a large piece of the dark purple that is in the center block! “Jackpot”! And I like it a lot.

Do you put a label on a donation quilt! I know that there are restrictions for QOV donations. I’ll check the Jack’s Basket website before I go further.

The backing is pieced, as almost all of my backings are these days! The pink is just tone on tone leaves, but the print is Cabbage Patch Kids. With pink hearts. I had already used some of this print, and there was just a chunk left, but the pinks were great together. 

A close up of the binding, and the quilting. A panto called "Promise". Isn't that a great design and a name for this quilt!  Also, there is some more of that Winnie the Pooh fabric. I think it is gone now!

Oh scraps equal?

Such a lot of mismatched scraps and chunks in my novelty bin. I saw this block on Sylvia's blog: Treadlestitches.   She had some great fabrics,  made 9 blocks, added a wide border and voila!, a kid's quilt!.

I could do that!  I started to lay out some coordinating fabrics and decided I could make a bunch and take them to my October retreat. All laid out on the portable design board. It worked and I came home with 14 blocks.  Now my dilemma is... do I cut back to  3X3 layout like Sylvia's or make 2 more for a 4X4 quilt top. It's busy and colorful and fun! 

Maybe I'll start with making 2 more, rearrange some of these and then, keep working on my Novelty Bin and make 9 more after that! 

Decisions, decisions!   I'll let you know what I decide.

Finished or Not Nov 1 2019

I’ve been a bit absent here lately. I havebeen sewing, but not enough progress to post about. I spent 3 days last week at a retreat. My OMG was completed. See my post about it. And some other blocks were assembled. I'll show those in a day or two.

 Also back from my quilter were these two wall hangings. They have been UFO s for a long time. The first one is totally done. The second on will be completed this weekend.

This was a panel that I added to to make it 36 X 54

The back has hanging triangles in the corners. Do you add triangles or a hanging sleeve to your wallhangings?

 I used a pattern called Sidelights for this one. The same panel, slightly different fabrics.

Can you see the snowflake pattern my quilter used. Because I will donate these to our local library's Silent Auction Fundraiser, my quilter generously donated the quilting!  Thank you MJ.

This one has hanging triangles also.

My hand has been giving me some pain recently, so I work on it in small chunks of time.

And this was a UFO challenge for APQ for October. I hoped to finish it by the 31st. But tiny ghost and goblins and a chili supper took precedence . One more side to hand stitch the binding and a few more threads to bury and that makes 3!

The pattern is called Wrapped and the colors are non traditionally Christmas. 

I did some straight line "channel" quilting on my Bernina. It's certainly not perfect, but it will be staying with me. Lots of thread ends to bury. Thanks to Patty for the tips here. I knew how , but the reminder was just in the nick of time!
