Oh Scrap!

 Haven’t shared here in a while. But I saw the new block drive for Many Hands and Many Hearts. I like the idea of scrappy low volume. So I cut 9 3.5” blocks of some I found in my stash. 

Today I logged on to Cynthia’s blog to double check the requirements and get a mailing address. Oops! Guess I’ll be doing sone unsewing and recutting. I mixed white backgrounds with cream background after the directions said NOT TO!  My stash is limited , but I think I can make it happen. 

Also finished my SAHRR (Stay At Home Round Robin), the top.  Making a backing today and will see if I can find an available quilter who could get it back to me in time for the parade on March 24th. Might be tricky!

A Snowy Cold Wet week!

 I dug out a Fall flavored UFO from Fall of 2023! Determined to finish for Fall 2024. Technically it is still Fall!

This kit was a gift from a friend. I love the colors and most of the fabric. The pattern cover photo showed a plaid pumpkin but no plaid fabric was included! Now, I love plaid! So I went to see if I could find a coordinating plaid in my stash. And I did! Lower left pumpkin!

Then came pumpkin carving with some littles down the street! 

And a quick finish for Table Scraps Challenge. Lights and Cats! So kitty coasters!

And then it snowed. Heavy wet , tree breaking snow. Good days to stay in and sew. 

And  sew I did! I had to put a piece on the bottom of the backing. Either the directions were wrong, or I mis read them, or I just screwed up.! Either way, it’s pieced. But it will be my label! Happy Accident !

Just this morning, Saturday,I put the last 12 “ of stitches in the binding. It is D-O-N-E, done! 

Just so you know, the background was a poor choice. That’s a brown four patch quilt on our guest bed. That room has the best light this morning. It’s is COLD 🥶 and windy outside!

Orange Scraps! Two Crumbs blocks and a few in progress

Crumb Blocks Plus!

My orange scraps are nearly gone!  Two crumbs blocks plus some bits and pieces that hopefully will yield 2 more. I have some, what I call "chunks", but those are safe in the basket! I may need some for binding  Precarious, my header photo!   Stay tuned. A decision of binding color has not been made.

So Scrappy and ScrapHappy Saturday!

This week I worked on my pink scrap bag. I pulled some strings and made these blocks 

and then I  made some crumb blocks using a method called Mile a Minute from Patchwork Posse

and just adding a strip to bring each one up to 7 “ so , I could trim to 6.5”! 

And yet, my scrap basket is still full to the top! How can that be?

Not pretty, I really don’t like the pinks that are almost brown. Rose, mauve ?  What color are they? Anyway, I’m determined to use them up!

I might be in over my head. I’ve never done blocks on point before! This is overwhelming! Unlucky June 13th!  At least it's not Friday the 13th!

It seems like my setting triangles are too big?! 

Will this work? Nothing ventured, nothing gained! I have to try it!

Blues, blues and more blues!

 

I finally got all 6 of my blue asterisks done for the Full Stop sampler. 

They haven't been trimmed. I am waiting for a proper ruler! 

This one on the right is one I attempted to trim and I am not satisfied. 

Also this is the last blue Geese Migration block and the collection on my design wall. I need another reddish orange and a rust orange or a dark burgundy.  I also need background fabric. Hopefully Ill be able to fill those holes when I go pick up my machine at the dealer in Rapid City. They have fabric!!!

OH(no...too many) SCRAPS !

I started sewing scraps to strips. Then twosies  to each other. Then Fours to fours and so on. I stacked the pieces by approximate size. All of a sudden I thought I had some big enough pieces to make a slab.

I’ll make a light neutral scrap basket! Lots of beige, cream, and white, but also some pink gingham, lavender polka dots, even some black on white. Oh, and there is a scrap that had a bit of red! It works. There is a piece or two of “darker than a paper bag”.  (Bonnie Hunter says if it reads lighter than a paper bag, it’s a neutral!) But it’s a homespun and I won’t use it anywhere else.  I was going to use muslin for the lining. But then I remembered that I had just taken apart an old holiday tablecloth that belonged to my MIL. Lots of good quality white fabric. The piece I cut only had one small pale cranberry stain! It’ll never show! 😊

But, I was over zealous! I have a pile of crumb blocks and pieces that won’t be needed for the basket.

I will need binding for the top and a piece for the handle, but I’ll have extra! Oh well, seed for another scrap project!

Scrappy Mail!!

 Oh Scrap! How do I love thee! I love mail! But this kind of mail is absolutely the best! 

As I was working on my scrappy slabs for this months scrap basket in yellow, I mentioned that I was nearly out of scraps and would need to cut into some bigger chunks. I got an email from Joy offering some of her scraps. 

Yesterday this package was in my mailbox. Look at all this scrappy goodness.

There’s polka dots, lemon slices, dragonflies, and bananas and more!  I’m excited to get to my sewing machine this afternoon. Our family ZOOM call will be at 11:30 MDT. Our Eastern time family will join 1:30, and for our West Coast son will join at 10:30 his time. It seems like a struggle but it’s working for us! Sometimes not everyone is available. Sometimes, there is a weekend adventure that takes precedence. Sometime a work obligation! But we try hard  to stay in touch and support each other! 

It's much cooler here this morning. 54 and windy. And now it's raining!  So a good day to be in the sewing room! If you need me, that’s where I’ll be!

Oh Scrap Baskets

I haven't joined Oh Scraps for a long time. Sundays sometimes get away from me and I don't get a post written.  But I have been sewing scraps.......scrap baskets


Rainbow Scrap Challenge's color for May is Dark Green.

But there were too many chunks and scraps:

So I made another:  this time lighter brighter greens:

Next I decided to do Orange.  I had used all my slab blocks in the making of Precarious last year. It still is just a top but I will finish it. So I set about to make more orange slab blocks. I had to make frankinbatting...then quilt the pieces. I had a old piece of plain orange in my stash that will work for lining. It was cheap fabric, purchased years ago to make clown costumes for Mr. Busy and me for a Halloween party. I didn't have lots of options in our small town. We had K-Mart! I haven't used the fabric in any quilts, the quality is not good enough. But I can't just toss it either. Glad I found a use for it here. I starched it heavily, so it wasn't so "thready"!

One small error....I was in such a hurry to get it done, so I could post, I forgot to put a piece of cardboard or poster board under the lining before I sewed the opening shut. OOPS!  I will cut something and just lay it in the bottom for now.  I'll fix it later!  

Now I want to catch up with the other colors from RSC20.

A SNAFU of the "scrappy" sort!

While I am looking forward to Christmas, my sewing mojo had taken a nosedive. I’m trying to decide what to do for RSC20. Thinking about UFOs to get on a list, etc.

My OMG for December was delivered to the quilter before Thanksgiving. She was in MN to spend the holiday with her younger son and family. The weather caused them to be delayed getting back home.

She was able to start to get my quilt on the long arm and discovered a problem . My backing was too small!!  OMG, I am so embarrassed!  Luckily she is a dear friend and lives close. So yesterday I picked up my bag if pieces and parts. I couldn’t figure out how that had happened. Then I found the note I had written to her. It said, the quilt is square, 48 x 48!  And the backing and batting are pieced to be 56 x 56. The requested 4” larger on each side, should be good , right!

Well my quilt is nor 48 x 48, as you can tell!

It's rectangular, 48 x 64! It had been a while since I finished it. And I thought the sticky note with the dimension was for the bow tie quilt! Wrong!!!!
My news year’s resolution will be to have a notebook/ journal where I keep the data on each finish!

Ok, lesson learned! (At least we will hope so!)

I did not have enough of the backing fabric but found a maroon and cream gingham that looks alright. No creative piecing either. Just git it done!  It's going to be a picnic quilt to carry in the car!

 I had to add 13 inches!

A close up, that doesn’t look so muted! I had to cut a new batting piece also. Luckily I had a twin size batt in my closet, 

It will go back to Lynn tomorrow And she will get it done. I’ll probably use the leftover original backing scraps for binding. Let’s see, 48 + 48 + 64+64+12” = 236! Add it again, write it down with details, Judy!! Go!
