September OMG Finish Link Up

 

My One Monthly Goal for September was to get the scrappy binding on my Rainbow Geese. Done and ready to hang at our local quilt show. 

 It looked like this the first of September. 

I wanted to put the colors closest to the actual blocks. Pink near pink, aqua near aqua. But I did NOT want to have a seam end up at the corner. So I seamed the colors and laid them around the corners, with loose ends at the middle of each side. 

This one would have been close! Then I attached the binding at each side as I usually do to end the binding on a regular quilt. I have gotten pretty comfortable with that process and it worked like a champ. No seams at the corners!!!

Then I gathered lots of colors of thread to match the different colors in the binding. Sometimes I use bobbin thread to sew down binding. I try to use up each spool and each bobbin. 

The stitching down of the binding began. I enjoy this process but my hands have been paining me a little lately. So I broke it up into several sessions. There was lots of changing of thread color and rethreading of needles.  That's how it is with scrappy binding.

And now its done. I have washed it, so it's all crinkly and cuddly looking. I was going to keep it for myself, but may send it off to my granddaughter in Florida. She has worn her graduation quilt out! She doesn't sew, but asked me the other day how to repair her quilt. (Hint, Hint!  I think!) 

You can see here that all four corners have a different color. This was one of the most fun quilts I have ever done. So many fabrics, so many memories, so much colorful happiness!  Almost all scraps from my stash. I did have to purchase a few solids. I did not have a lot of those. Now I have a better selection! I used solid as the "sky" for the geese in each block. 

I'm excited to be linking this up with Patty at Elm Street Quilts. I love this One Monthly Goal event she hosts. It's doable and keeps me focused. I never would have completed so many projects without this spurring me on.

Finished or Not Finished Friday! #65

 So you are all tired of seeing this quilt! But it is Done and Done! Washed , dried and waiting to hang at the local quilt show!

I’d like to hang it with the single pink block in the upper right hand corner. But part of the backing is a word print, and Mr Busy just couldn’t hold it “upside down from his point of view! ....Oh, BTW!   Today is his birthday! I told him he could do whatever he wanted!  It's cold (43) here this am and windy, so probably he won't be flying airplanes. But we will see.... 

Then I folded it and hung it to show the four different colored corners. Just because! 

I am so pleased with it!

3. Decide on what to take to Loose Threads’s Sleep at Home Fall Retreat!  No Idea!

4. Check out the Banned Book Reading Challenge at the library!  Check!  I talked to the librarians. They are knee deep in some local challenges of 22 books on our youth and children's library shelves. So they are running behind on getting the Adult Reading Challenge up and going. They advised me to check back today. I will do that. In the mean time I made a list of the books I have already read that are on the Top 100 Books Banned List of the past decade.  Like To Kill A Mockingbird!  I have only read Ten!  Wow, I have my work cut out for me!

Next Week  September 7th to September 13th. 

1. Finish the binding on Rainbow Geese!

2. Sew more CiL blocks.

3. Work on getting the sashings on the Hollow 9-patch blocks.

4. Start on Table Scraps Challenge in Orange!

5. Read a Banned Book!

September OMG

 

My one Monthly Goal for September is a bit easier than my August OMG!

Get this quilt trimmed. Pick the solids for a scrappy binding and attach. 

So it will be ready for our annual quilt show! The theme this year  is Flying Geese! I think I nailed it!

7 blocky ones done and one fancy one. The blocky ones went quickly. The fancy one ended up being wonky. You’d think after nearly 2 years of making geese migration blocks, I’d have that flip and sew corner technique down pat! I must truly be “1/2 a bubble  off” as Mr Busy sometimes tells me! 😊

This week's to-do list  June 29 - July 5

1.Pick an OMG for July and write a post for Patty at Elm Street Quilts

2. Put out July decor

3. Decide on a backing for Rainbow Geese

4. Join Exclamation Points and Semi Colons into rows.

5. Make a Hollow Nine patch in the color for July!

June OMG Finish

 

My OMG for June was to get my Geese Migration blocks to the flimsy/quilt top stage! It’s been a long time coming. I made monthly color block in 2020! Angela usually give us 10 months of colors, leaving the last 2 months to build a quilt or add dark and light neutrals. In 2020 I made 18 blocks. So in 2021 I knew I needed at least 7 more. There are 25 10” finished blocks in this one. Then in April, I decided to put it on the design wall to make sure they made a cohesive balanced quilt. 

I need 2 more blocks, preferably a coral like pink and a rusty orange red. A trip to the quilt store for solids in those colors was necessary. So, 2 blocks done! 

Then it was time to cut setting triangles and sashings. I read the directions, and read them again! Then again! I’d never done an on point quilt! I printed out the coloring page provided in the pattern. That helped me see the steps!

Back on the design wall and a panic comment in Sunday, Oh Scrap party. Cynthia Brunz, the designer, assured me the triangles were not too big! Just big enough to allow for proper aligning! Other quilters chimed in and built my confidence! 

I kept going! Slow and steady, pinning intersections and pressing sashings!

 And Voila 

Rainbow Geese happened! I am so pleased. 

This photo is a West to East configuration! 

And this one is South to North! 

Though it’s hard to pick a favorite block, this one might be it. There are scraps of fabric used in both my great granddaughter’s baby quilts. And there is pink from a pillowcase I made just for me and pink from Breast Cancer Ribbon pins made for a Relay for Life team! 

Rainbow Geese is now a quilt top!    So my goal has been met and has exceeded my expectations!  I’m linking with:

June 15 - June 21

1. Sew purple hollow 9 patch    #3  Done

2. Keep working on Geese Migration blocks.   Done

Rows 1-4 are joined and on the hall design board. I can't reach the top right hand corner of my sewing room design wall with out a stool. And I did not go get the step stool. I will finish rows 5,6,7 and then join the two triangular pieces.  That's my plan at least. 

Rows 5 and 6. Row 7 is one block and under my needle. 

3. Get label sewn on H2H Hometown Hero quilt, so I can give it to Becky when she gets home on Friday!    Done

And wrinkly! I washed and dried it to make sure the dark brown didn’t run! 

Label is attached to the corner. I don't have photos of when I gave it to her. There were too many hugs and tears!

4. Work on Table Scraps Challenge.  Done   See Friday post for more detail. 

5. Bonus:  cut more Plus fabrics for more Positivity blocks    Done

Enough for 12 more blocks. 

Phew!   I'm taking a breath and posting the ChrisKnits as soon as I get up on Tuesday.  First though, here is my list for the upcoming week!

This is purple Saturday number 3! 

I finished one more hollow nine patch!

And here is a glimpse of another purple project. Reveal next week! 

Pinwheels, one of 5! 

This is the back! I have a large piece of this from a donation from a friend! I’m not sure whether this was from something Kari was doing or from her mother’s stuff! It’s kind of ugly, but good backing! Or cut up smaller, much smaller! 

In other news, I’m working on the green row! Row 1(the single block row) and Row 2 ( the three block row) and the top left corner are sewn together! Not trimmed yet, but I think it looks good!  Huge sigh! 

The blue/aqua row needs the end setting triangles attached and the green yellow row is just on the design board. 

 

I thought I'd share another bit of purple that I noticed again when I was taking a photo of the #3 hollow nine patch.  Just so you don't worry that I'll run out of purple!  A scrappy basket and overflow in a shoebox tote. See the bit of purple on my bulletin board?

 

This is it! A gift from my SIL several years ago! It's the cups from a Victoria Secrets bra! Stitched together to form a sort of bag or purse or what-have-you!  Beaded with some large purple beads. I hang it on my bulletin board. It holds business card and contact cards that I pick up here and there!

Funny, huh?  Purple is a favorite color and I am a breast cancer survivor! My SIL's friend makes these as a fund raiser for Breast Cancer Research!
