Finished another Whoop Whoop

Well, this is my mindless sewing lately. You all know I made 2 green scrap baskets, and last week an orange one. This week ,in an effort to get caught up on the rainbow colors for 2020, I tackled teal/aqua/turquoise! My crumb blocks were already done. I only had to add a little bit to one slab to make it big enough.

Then I looked for lining fabric. I can’t stand to use fabric I might need sometime for a utilitarian application like lining! I know, I know ! It’s just fabric! I had some small chunks of some Winnie the Pooh fabric left over from this baby quilt.

This was my 2nd Great Grandson's New Baby quilt!

I’ve used it several other places.

This went to Jack's Basket last year!

 In fact, I gave some away to a friend and she returned the leftovers! So these were the last of it. I pieced and puzzled to get 2 pieces 10.5 x 7.5, and  2 pieces 7.5 x 7.5. I couldn't get the bottom piece. So, I cut 2 bottom pieces, one outside, one inside from a large multi floral.

This is all that is left of it now!  1 2" strip, 2-  2.5" strip, 10 2" squares and some skinny strips that will go into my basket to make a crocheted rug!  Whoop Whoop !


I quilted the slab blocks with a serpentine stitch running vertically. I had a scrap piece of fusible batting that had a flaw. It was lapped over and fused by almost 3 inches. When I discovered it in another project, I put it in my scrap stash thinking I’d use it in mug rugs or something. It works here.

So another basket done. And 3 plastic shoe boxes are empty. I still need to make a light blue one and of course there will be a new color for June! So 2 more on the horizon.

A “Finished” and an “or Not”

My first little finish is another scrap basket. I’ve had slab/crumb block in my UFO box for a couple of years. I always wanted to do these cute baskets. So this summer is the time!

Light or bright green this time.

Here it is next to it's darker cousin. Now neither one is overflowing.


I have participated in CiL’s block drive at Kat and Cat Quilts since January 2018. Currently Kat is taking a break. She’s catching up with all the Blocks from the previous drives. Though she didn’t say, I would assume her “Day Job” is taking it’s toll also. She is in the medical arena. So I made a little baby quilt to donate to Jack’s Basket.

Last week I posted the 5 pieced blocks ( are they chunky churn dash?) and two hour glass blocks asking for advice. I just looked back at my blog and these blocks were first made by Sylvia at Treadlestitches. She calls them Nine Patches and Rails. See her finish here!

Alycia suggested setting the hour glass blocks to frame the block. I think this is what she had in mind. I love it.

On my design wall with the top and bottom borders just stuck in place. You can see my original post with all the blocks here.  Lots of these scrappy blocks. More boy like in colors and fabrics. So I will be looking for setting fabric for them.

It wasn’t big enough for Jack's Basket so I added a cream 1 inch border then a 3 inch pink border. It’s just right now.  I wonder if I can quilt it myself ? I’m reluctant to try. I can do wavy lines, stitch in the ditch or some outline quilting. But I’d really like some  flowers or swirls or something more graceful. When I get the backing pieced...I think I’ll call my long arm quilter and see if she has an opening.

This is better, borders are done.  I am so pleased with the almost finish.

Or Not Finished Friday!

Seems I have more in the Not Finished column than in the Finished column this week!

I'm still building garlic knot blocks. Including these six, I have 69 finished. I'm going for 88, in a 8 X 11 layout. I have 4 more in partial mode and 5 more sets cut. That means back to my scrap bin to cut 10 more sets and then, maybe then I can put them together!

 I have 6  blocks for Kat's Coverered in Love block drive.  These are 12.5" blocks in blue, seafoam green?, and white/gray!. My stash is nearly cleared out of those colors.  I try to make 8 to mail to Kat.

And I am not finished with Step 1 of Alycia's Mystery Winter Quilt Along. Trimming up HST blocks to 6.5 inches. I am having fun with this one. All 3 pieces of fabric where in my stash.  Whoop Whoop!

I'll keep working on all these "not" finished things. Maybe something will get done. Of course, maybe not!

Finished!!

When you have some Christmas scraps that are really sort of ugly!  What do you do? You cut them smaller!   Then you look for a free pattern or tutorial and you make a Christmas star/snowflake!

Then you back it with a chunk left over from a long ago project and you use up the leftover red and green uglies in the binding!

I had a comment on the "neutral " square in position 2 of the nine patch above. Yes, it doesn't look neutral here, but it will have to do.

Then you photograph it on your dining room table because it’s 9pm and it's  the only spot in the house with enough light. 


It’s really a large pillow cover, but I don't have a 20 in pillow form. A trip to Joann's is in order or maybe to Walmart, those are my only options here in my small city! Hobby Lobby is in the "coming soon" stage. It can't be soon enough for me!   I’m thinking if taking a bed pillow apart and using it to make  2 or at least one and a half pillow forms.

Retreat Project 10-2019 and some RSC19 sewing

I did not get the last 3 Tiny Tuesday blocks done. I will work on them soon. I was at a retreat for a few days the 3rd week in October and some scrappy sewing was accomplished.

First and foremost was the completion of the quilt top for my RSC19 Bow Tie blocks. Mr Busy held it up from behind the back fence. Wish I would have pushed the gate shut....then you would not have to look at our trash cans!

I had made black bowties all along, because I knew I wanted to feature them. This will be a car quilt, to go in my "new last November" black Equinox.  Chevy logo=bow tie. Maybe you have to be married to a car guy to "get it", but it works for me. I'll be looking for a dark backing so we can use it for a picnic quilt and not have to worry too much about getting it dirty. Plus we have " littles" in the car sometimes, so you know it will get used. Some of the blocks seem a little light in the big picture, but it is what it is and they were all from my stash. But a lesson to remember.


While at retreat, this happened too!

Lots of squares and strip piecing to make 9-patch and rail blocks. Here are 6, I made 14. I haven't put them on the design wall yet, I may need 2 more for a 4X4 layout for a good size kid quilt. Again, only scraps from my stash!  And the novelty bin is still "full"

And these 2" squares became:     I used Bonnie Hunters Essential Triangle Tool to make the 2" HST from 2.5" matched strips. Some neutral and blue, some neutral and red and some red/blue.  The layout on my portable design boards was a bit tricky. We were limited in space, but I just did the 4 quadrants , one at a time and that worked.

I'm early for 4th of July!  There is a sashing strip of neutral down the middle with a red square in the center. I kind of like it this way though. Guess I'll make the sashing strips and then decide. It's a pillow cover.

It's on the Design Wall...

And starting to be assembled!

All the blocks for the 5 yard quilt are assembled and put up on the design wall. This is the biggest quilt my wall will accommodate.

I have started to assemble it, stitching blocks A to B in Row 1, then A to B in Row 2 and so on. There are 6 rows X 5 columns. I will sew all column E blocks to CD blocks then assemble the rows horizontally. Usually I web a quilt, but this week has been one of sporadic bits of sewing time, so this simpler method seemed the way to go.

The missing blocks are at my machine ready to go under the needle.

This is my OMG project for June, so I am well on my way if I don't get sidetracked!

Sorting, Pressing, Stripping, Not much sewing

This week was busy at our house. Our youngest granddaughter and her fiance were in town fromSaturday through Wednesday afternoon. We celebrated birthdays ( hers and her sister's), the Memorial Holiday was celebrated too! So there were people here for most meals and some we carried in. Phew! I was tired when it was over.

So I did not get much sewing done.

A little bit of orange string blocks.

There were some garlic knots constructed. I'm not fond of the 6th one ( 2nd row, 3rd block), the monkey fabric was mostly blue, but when cut, I got a monkey face that is pretty prominent!  Oh well, in the big scheme, it will work OK!

And a whole lot of pressing and sorting of the  donated fabric. 

I made a quilt for a great grandson( he is going to 6 in February) using some like the Bronco fabric on the left. I had used up all of mine since then low and behold another chunk of it shows up in the donated fabric!  WOW!

See the blue solid and the baseball print to the right?  That is destined to be part of a 5 yard quilt for my brother. He is a Little League umpire and avid baseball and football fan. He is the only one of my siblings that I have not made a quilt for yet.  So there is that!

And I stripped the scraps and other odd fabric into 1/2" strips to be rolled into a ball and crochet into throw rugs. 

The basket on the left is full of scraps that need to be joined together and rolled into a ball for use later.

Green Mr. Hoot!

I was reluctant to post the photo of my owl from Tiny Tuesday this week. I struggle with "Tiny" and then you add flip triangles in 1" squares and you have a recipe for disaster. I had to trim a couple of pieces to make them fit. And I think my eyes are cut a bit big also. Can you see the left side of his head, on the right as you are looking at him, is "off"?  

But Diann at Little Penguin Quilts posted her owl and he is a bit wonky too. So I am feeling just a tad better!


I am enjoying these Tiny Tuesday blocks so far.  I posted about my sprout and bow tie blocks last week. I am only making 4 of each color so it's easy to get them done all at once.

A finish and a not quite finished.

Finally a finish!

One of my projects for February was to make 4 bowl cozies. I completed the top for my sister's comfort quilt . It's a pattern from the Oct/Nov 18 issue of McCall's Quick Quilts, called Bonfire by Scott Flanagan. I used my own set of batiks and cut them to 2 1/2" wide. So the colors are my choices, but the design and the original colors instantly made me think of my sister.

While I waited for my long armer to return from her vacation in Florida, I started on the bowl cozies.
I sorted through my larger chunks,  and tried to come up with fabrics that matched the intended recipients. The pattern calls for 10" squares and 2 10" squares of COTTON batting. In the past I have trouble with the bulk of 2 layers of batting and 2 layers of fabric, when it comes to sewing them together and turning them inside out , then top stitching. In fact, last night as I finished them, I broke a needle.  A new needle, UGH!  I made an extra cozy and this time used batting cut at 9.5 inches square. I like that better for putting it together and I hope it works as it is used. We will see.  After I posted about the bowl cozies in my February OMG Link Up , I got a comment from Lori in SD, regarding plate cozies. I have not heard of them before, but I am going to give them a try. 14" squares and shallow, barely there darts!  I'll report back on how they go!

Waiting in line!  I did these in a sort of production line way. I did each step, 4 times. I found it cumbersome to use my ruler to mark the darts on each piece, so I rummaged for a scrap of lightweight cardboard. ( I took apart a "Kleenex" box) and cut a template.

It's not pretty, but it worked great. I just made sure that the original corner was square, then did the 1" and 2" measurement and cut off the triangle.  Much faster.

Stitched, turned, top stitched and ready to mail!

 Yes, there are 5. The one with the smaller piece of batting matches the two I made for my granddaughter and her fiance, so I'll send them 3.  They have a house mate, so maybe sometimes they all eat together!
