June RSC 23

This year I am finishing up UFO’s or as in May, moving them toward the finish line. 

My spreadsheet has two quilts listed for Light Blue! 

My ZigZag quilt: 

The rows are all together, so I just need to sew them together, find a suitable backing and get batting. Then an appointment with the long arm quilter. That seems to be my biggest obstacle this year. They are all so busy, or have stopped quilting for others. 

And Tiny Tuesday:

This needs backing, batting and quilted also! 

And so what do I do, I’m making a house quilt!!. Throw size, so maybe I can quilt it myself! 😳

Blocks are done, Im auditioning sashing and border fabric! Unsuccessfully, I might add!

OMG May and OMG Finish

May has really been an Oh My Gosh month! Maybe finally there will be a lessening of the number of cases and deaths of this virus. We haven't had a new positive case in our county in 4 days and no death in our county at all.  Only 12 deaths total, but we are a low population state. Only 578,759. We are the least populated state in the US.

I am really happy with it. Now to find a backing and make an appointment with the long armer.

Finished or Not Friday - Flimsy Finish

I'm finishing flimsies/quilt tops. One of these days I'll be able to deliver some to my long arm quilters. My hold up is batting. My long armers are fairly new at the business and so they require that the quilter supply the batting. I have some pieces that I need to fuse together for some of my smaller finishes.

Tiny Tuesday is complete. I had to use scrappy white on white backgrounds and even a different white on white for the 2" outside border. It looks ok to me though. I promised Dianne at Little Penguin Quilts that I would leave my wonky fan block and my not so perfect owl and pig blocks. So they are included. I had to make one correction as I was webbing the blocks. One side of a block strip was cut at 1.5" not 1.75" as directed.  OOPS!  I don't know how I missed it when I made it, but I found it when I was sewing blocks together!  I had an extra red block that used the same fabric, so I took that one apart. It worked out fine.

I'm not fond of tiny, but these blocks gave me something to focus on that did not require large blocks of time last year when my sister was under going chemo for lung cancer and I couldn't be with her. One day at a time our mother used to say, and this helped me focus one Tuesday, one block at a time.


I didn't have enough blocks to set the colors in rows. And I wanted to be done, so I did not make extra. I used Angela's example of setting the colors in blocks of color. Angela set hers alternating straight sets with diagonal sets. I deviated from the directions and set some of my individual blocks differently. It did not cause a problem though. It may not be a organised, but it's for me. Now I have to decide on a backing.

I have another little quilt that I need your help with. The pieced blocks in the middle and the corners have a girly vibe. I want to send it to Jack's Basket.

 I have been holding on to the pink with tiny yellow dots, waiting to find a pale yellow to make hour glass blocks to go with it. This quarantine has made that kind of hard. I found a mottled cream,with pink and green in my stash. I thought it would work. I made one set of hour-glass blocks. Now I don't know if I like it. Do you like the hour-glass blocks or just the pink blocks?

Or maybe just the cream blocks?  It's so scrappy and busy, I am just not sure.  It will need a border to be 36 X 36 for the donation requirements.
Anyway, I'll consider all options. Thanks for your input.

Goal Setting May OMG

I’m in a bit of a quandary. I need to set a goal, I want to set a goal..but which?  Do I go small and doable? Leave room for a squirrel or two if one catches my fancy. Do I go big in order to get another finish?

The small project is crumb blocks left over from 2018. These are the dark green, May 2020's color for RSC20. I need to make them into a scrap basket using Angela's tutorial. 

 The bigger project is 2019 Tiny Tuesday blocks. They kept me sane while worrying about my sister during her cancer treatments last year. Some of them on my design wall last May. I'm not even sure how many blocks I have. I know some are not finished with their setting strips or triangles. So that is the bigger project.

 I need to finish them both!


Soooooooo!

I am setting my One Monthly Goal for May 2020:   to get the Tiny Tuesday blocks finished and put together into a quilt top! I've looked at Diann's, and Angela's and Mari's.  So I have some lofty goals to try to meet! They are all so beautiful!

If I get the scrap basket done too, well so much the better.

ScrapHappy Saturday October Dark

October color is dark: browns, blacks, greys

I already made black Bow Tie blocks for my "We Switched to Chevy" quilt! There are 8 black blocks here.

And the first Tiny Tuesday block:

When you cut for tiny blocks, sometimes you can't include all the fabric= (Cho)colate!

Then I did one more purple sprout block, because all the pieces were already cut and ready to go.

I wasn't sure I wanted to make brown/black/gray scrappy sprout blocks....but I have a large basket of brown fabric. Some yardage, some fat quarters, some scraps. So I dove in, cut 2.5" squares, 2.5" strips of light and dark to make HST and some neutral 2.5" squares. Two done and they aren't too bad!

My first week of brown is in the books. Not sure about more brown/gray/black sprouts, but I can always do some string blocks.

Tomorrow is our local NEW (North East Wyoming) Quilt Show. I entered 2 small quilts. I'll try to remember to take photos of the spectacular ones and post them next week.

Scrap Happy Saturday September Purple

It's the last Saturday in September. It's raining and COLD! It's 44 with "a feels like" of 35 degrees.  There is a 6-8 year olds Football Game on the schedule this morning!  BRRR and Yuk!  Luckily they only play about 45 minutes.

The week was pretty productive in the scrap department.

I finished the last purple Tiny Tuesday block - Bright Hopes. And I sewed the necessary 3 more  black Bow tie blocks.  I am close to being ready to get the Bow Tie block quilt to a completed top ( flimsy) stage so I can decide on backing and get it off to the quilter.

Though that could be a problem. I have 2 favorite local long arm quilter friends. Lynn just got her machine back from the "hospital" after 5 weeks, so she is backed up. And Marva fell and broke her ankle 2 weeks ago. Plus they both are planning to snow bird this winter, so they will be unavailable for several months. I am going to have to find someone else, I'm afraid.

I completed a 3rd Scrappy Sprout  Here are all three. In the project box they go! I have no plan for them, so have no idea how many I may need. It's a WIP!

I finished the binding and the big stitch quilting on my October Retreat Challenge.  Here is a sneak peak.

Yikes! My 3 Most Dreaded Words!

I always used to say my 3 morst dreaded words were, "miniature", "paper pieced" " stars" Now I can add, "tiny", "paper pieced" "storm at sea" .  I really like the Storm At Sea block, I really like purple, I wanted to challenge myself!

Well, my attempt was a fail.

From afar it's not TOO bad! 

 My block ended up being bigger than 5" unfinished. I went back and reread Angela's directions. I did not DOUBLE check the print out to make sure the pieces were correct. Now, what do I do, the squares are kind of wonky!  Redo it and see if I can improve?  Fudge the setting pieces so they finish at the proper size of 7.5"?  I am behind on my Tiny Tuesday blocks as it is! 

I think I am going to go forward. Set the block and make sure it is correct for the quilt. Catch up with the blocks I have missed.  Then if the block still bothers me, I'll try and redo it!.

And so I did!  Not the redo, the accept and go on part!

Now to catch up on the setting of the blue blocks and continue with the purples.  Today is Mr Busy's birthday. No big celebration planned. There are cards on the table that have arrived in the mail. I am planning a crockpot meal, and maybe we will go out for pie!

Scrappy Tiny Tuesday Blocks all Caught Up PLUS

Last Sunday, I think , I cut the tiny pieces for the last pink block and 2 blue blocks. The Tiny Tuesday Blocks have been such a challenge for me! Fun, for sure, not always perfect, but so good for me!

I have not set them either straight or diagonally. I am not sure about them. The Double 9 patch, I hope to set diagonally because.....look at the center! The fabric is little angels and pink breast cancer ribbons, when you cut so small you never know what you will get, but I got an almost perfectly centered little red headed angel face peeking out at me.  I have be able to see her!

I really liked doing Libby’s block too...but am crushing on her fabrics more than mine! Teehee 😜!

I am working on a figure-it-out-as-you-go, table runner for a challenge. It is got me in a "pickle".  I don't have EQ, so graph paper is my go-to. Sigh!  It is definitely scrappy, and definitely not blue. I'll have pictures next week!

I did get my Wiggle Time top completed. That was my OMG for August. And I purchased flannel for the back. Now to get on the list for my long arm quilter. The baby is due the 2nd of October and it must be mailed. But I hope to wait to find out her name, so I can make a proper label.

I finally settled on this arrangement- suggested by Cynthia.  So it has the top and bottom sashings on and is ready to be quilted.

 I chose this Snuggle Flannel from JoAnn's. It has been washed and today I will piece it per the pattern instructions.

Last Scrap Happy Saturday July

Do you share your “fails”?  Normally that is hard for me and I am trying not to be self deprecating! But I learn from most of my mistakes so that is a good thing!

My first attempt at Tiny Tuesday's wonky star was way past wonky, it was weird!

See how the points in the 2 squares don’t meet in the middle? And there is minimal contrast! Yuk!

Better I think! I’ll keep the weird one and add it to the back or make an inside pocket in a bag or something! 

I also did a few more Shoo Fly Shoo Blocks. Cause you have to do the red, white and blue one while it’s still July!  I find it’s interesting that the pinkish block looks different than the R,W,B block and the black ,tan and purple block. I think it looks different anyway, Mr. Busy says they are the same!
Different perspectives, I guess.

Nothing else is finished or even almost finished. I did make potato salad in anticipation of our son's visit. Also a batch of his favorite cookies, a rhubarb custard cake with some gifted rhubarb and I chopped some zucchini for use at a later date.

Thursday, our granddaughter and her two littles came over to visit and play with Uncle Scott!  We had a good time, but boy do they wear me out!

More Scrappy PInk

Last Saturday I did not post. We were in Colorado, doing this!

We had 3 appointments at 3 different bridal shops. I lost count of how many dresses she tried on. She did not find THE DRESS, but she narrowed down the style. The one on the left was a definite, "no".

We had so much fun. Her mom, her sister, 3 bridesmaids and me. Giggles and lots of girl talk was prevalent.

We even checked out a few tuxes for the groom. 

So this week, I got this accomplished. 

Four pink bow tie blocks. I'm a bit disappointed in the contrast in the one on the bottom left, but it is leftover from the baby quilt for my oldest great granddaughter. The fabric on the lower right is from the quilt for my youngest great granddaughter. Both of their birthdays are in July, I had to make July bowtie blocks. 

I also did both of the Tiny Tuesday blocks. Pisces Fish and a Polka Dot backed,  rather plump pig. 

Critically, her chin doesn't tuck under her snout as it should, her forehead droops a bit and it looks like her tail has lost it curl. From far away, she's pretty darn cute.

I also made 4 blocks for Covered in Love block drive. Red, White and Blue Stars is the bloc for July and August.
