Finished or Not Finished Friday!

Not really a finish, but all the blocks are finished. I made scrappy sprout blocks in 2019 during the RSC19. Some months I made more, some months less. I didn’t really have a layout in mind. Last week I opened the project box and started putting them up on the design wall. I roughly followed the ROY G BIV.

Red, Orange Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet!

This was arrangement I settled on after several revisions!

There will be four brown blocks at the bottom. There are 3 empty places in the right column. Red, between the pink and orange, yellow below the orange and green below that!

So now they are done. I still need to decide on sashings between the rows. I’m thinking light Grunge.
Maybe Manilla, Vanilla, or Sugar Cookie!

They hopefully will stay on the wall, I will get the sashing fabric and get it put together. Fingers crossed.

To-Do Tuesday #9 and Weekly Progress Update.

Go check out the Linky Party at Home Sewn by Us to see the other To Do Lists and how everyone fared.  Sue and Roseanne provide this space to commit to a list and then see it to completion.

To-Do  for the Week of September 30 - October 6

1. Complete the Dark Red Scrap Basket   ✅

2. Select a few more books to be donated to the Quilt Show Boutique ✅

I had to pack these and the others I had pulled, into two bags and Mr Busy carried them into the Quilt Show for me on Thursday!

3.Make 2 Fiddlesticks blocks for Covered in Love. ✅

The one on the left looks gray....it's pale aqua.  Indoor lighting at it's worst!

Now for next week:

Week of October 7 - October 13

1. Work on yellow scrap basket!

2. Cut blocks for 3 Yard Quilt for Loose Threads Mini Retreat

3. Make necessary sprouts blocks. 1-Red, 1- Green, 2- Brown.

That should keep me busy!  And on the 16th is our Mini Retreat.

Happy Yellow ScrapHappy Saturday!

I’m late getting my post out today! This morning I worked at our annual NEW (North East Wyoming) Quilt Show. I sat and counted the people as they left, my friend Connie, counted the people as they came in. Our venue is an extraordinary county facility And one of the requirements for use was.., only 250 people at a time. That was not a problem this morning. We had steady walk-ins, but also, people looked, shopped and left.

I took some photos...not many! I didn’t stand among others very long.

My friend Jeans’s Garlic Knots from Bonnie Hunter. She lives in a fifth wheel camper while her new house is being built on the family ranch! She stitched this in her little sewing nook! And there is yellow!

Yellow in this string quilt too! It was started at a retreat last October and finished in Alabama over the winter. My friend Marva and her hubby are snowbirds. She sews in the camper too!  She pieced 4.5 quilts while in Alabama last winter.

I did put my scrappy sprouts from 2019 on the design wall! I rearranged the colors several times and finally ( maybe) settled on this. I need one more each of red, yellow and green. And 2 more brown.

All these parts are cut and yellow is done!

I started “making fabric” for a yellow scrap baskets! I’ve just about used up all the crumbs, I’ll have to cut into chunks and bigger pieces before long.

And I made a yellow and aqua block for Covered in Love. Kat at Kat and Cat Quilts.and Mary of Zippy Quilts call them Fiddlesticks.

I like these, which is why I bought Amanda Jean Nyberg's pattern called Bright Birch Trees.

Kat changed the directions a bit and I  had a bit of trouble with the first(aqua) one. It starts out with a 14  inch square. You add strips of pieced fabric then cut to 12.5” for use. I put the strips too far apart and ended up with a piece too large to cut back to 12.5 and not cut off the pieced strips. So I fixed it! It's OK, but I learned some things.

And I leave you with a couple more quilts from the quilt show that have yellow in them.

This string block cut into circle is so cool. The yellow really pops!

I'm linking up with Angela's ScrapHappy Saturday.  it's 8:02 pm Wyoming time, 10:02 pm Florida time.

ScrapHappy Saturday October Dark

October color is dark: browns, blacks, greys

I already made black Bow Tie blocks for my "We Switched to Chevy" quilt! There are 8 black blocks here.

And the first Tiny Tuesday block:

When you cut for tiny blocks, sometimes you can't include all the fabric= (Cho)colate!

Then I did one more purple sprout block, because all the pieces were already cut and ready to go.

I wasn't sure I wanted to make brown/black/gray scrappy sprout blocks....but I have a large basket of brown fabric. Some yardage, some fat quarters, some scraps. So I dove in, cut 2.5" squares, 2.5" strips of light and dark to make HST and some neutral 2.5" squares. Two done and they aren't too bad!

My first week of brown is in the books. Not sure about more brown/gray/black sprouts, but I can always do some string blocks.

I'll link this post to Angela's ScrapHappy Saturday link up party as soon as she posts in the morning. It's 8PM in Wyoming and it's raining. No snow yet, so that's a plus. Tomorrow is our local NEW (North East Wyoming) Quilt Show. I entered 2 small quilts. I'll try to remember to take photos of the spectacular ones and post them next week.

Scrap Happy Saturday September Purple

It's the last Saturday in September. It's raining and COLD! It's 44 with "a feels like" of 35 degrees.  There is a 6-8 year olds Football Game on the schedule this morning!  BRRR and Yuk!  Luckily they only play about 45 minutes.

The week was pretty productive in the scrap department.

I finished the last purple Tiny Tuesday block - Bright Hopes. And I sewed the necessary 3 more  black Bow tie blocks.  I am close to being ready to get the Bow Tie block quilt to a completed top ( flimsy) stage so I can decide on backing and get it off to the quilter.

Though that could be a problem. I have 2 favorite local long arm quilter friends. Lynn just got her machine back from the "hospital" after 5 weeks, so she is backed up. And Marva fell and broke her ankle 2 weeks ago. Plus they both are planning to snow bird this winter, so they will be unavailable for several months. I am going to have to find someone else, I'm afraid.

I completed a 3rd Scrappy Sprout  Here are all three. In the project box they go! I have no plan for them, so have no idea how many I may need. It's a WIP!

I finished the binding and the big stitch quilting on my October Retreat Challenge.  Here is a sneak peak.

I finished my QOV for presentation in November.  And finished 8 blocks for the current CiL block drive. See that post here.

Bye Bye Blues

It's the last ScrapHappy Saturday for June!  I took the time to organize and count all my Tiny Tuesday blocks. I like seeing them all together. You may notice that the reverse applique heart, with Pooh in the center does not have setting fabric added. I am still trying to decide if I am going to try that technique again. Maybe from this far away it doesn't look too bad, but I'll always know how uneven the edges are. Same for the blue fan block, it does look wonky on the design wall. I probably will redo that one too!

Wow, my room is a bit messy too!  I can't seem to keep it neat in all corners!

Last Tuesday's Monkey Wrench block. I like it a lot and maybe it was supposed to be set on the diagonal, but I like this block set straight.

And I dug out the other RSC19 blocks for June.  Four Scrappy Sprouts, I will add light blue at the proper time.  Three bow tie blocks, I only need six for my planned layout, so the other three will be lighter blues. And 4 string blocks. No plan for the strings as of yet. And I am running out of strings long enough to make the diagonal, even on these 7.5" blocks. I really don't want to cut into chunks or fat quarters yet! I'll just keep making as I can and see how they go.

I am always anxious for the new color. Finally it is starting to feel like summer here. We actually hit 84 degrees this week. My temperature quilt is nearly half done. When all the June blocks are attached, I'll share a photo.

I'll be linking up with Angela's ScrapHappy Saturday linkup party!  See you there!

Until next time,

Scrappy Saturday June 15th

So June's color is Blue.  Navy or Med Blue is suggested. My scrappy sprout blocks had been partially constructed prior to the announcement of the color. So there is a bit of lighter blue in some of the sprouts. The contrast is good.

I may have posted these previously! This is what could happen if your 5 yo great grandson wants to watch you fix the strap on his reading pillow and bumps into the design board you hastily laid aside, but not "UP"!
Oh well, it was remedied very quilkly!

I made a couple more Bow tie blocks, then went back and checked my graph paper layout cheat sheet!  I only need  6 Blue blocks and I would like them to be a mixture of blues. So 3 dark/med blue will be good.

I have been working on Tiny Tuesday Blues.  The Grandmothers Fan block gave me the blues!  Or maybe a better description would be "the jitters".  I procrastinated, and procrastinated!  I happily made the 2nd Tiny Tuesday block for June from Cynthia's cute and well written tutorial.  I'ts the one on the right and as of now, does not have a name. I'm calling mine Town Square, until Cynthia picks a name officially!

I searched the internet for hints on paper piecing with freezer paper. A long time ago that method was taught at a retreat and this is the finished product. So I know I can "Do It".  But I had forgotten the fine points!

I was able to find a link to a free guide here. Thank you Rebecca!! So I happily printed the document and set about paper piecing the tiny blue fan!  When it came time to trim the fan arc, I again experienced the "jitters"!  Slow and steady, Judy. You can do this! I took Angela's advice and cut an oversize block to appliqued the fan to. Then I worried about turning under the edges. So I ironed the shape onto the back of the block and cut the shape including seam allowance. The seam allowance was generous, maybe 3/8 ".

Have you ever used the spray starch method for turning under edges for applique?  I remember seeing a friend and experienced quilter do it a few years ago. So I sprayed some starch in an extra laundry detergent cap, found a small soft bristled paint brush, turned on the iron and set to it!  You basically paint the starch on the seam allowance and press it over the pattern edge.  Sometimes a stylus works to keep your fingers out of the way.

Then I did the same for the small background piece that will be appliqued on top of the narrow part of the fan blades.

It is done!  A tiny bit wonky, but I am basically pleased.  See the photo above, next to the Town Square block.
