Slow Sunday Stitching

 

I’m joining Kathy and other slow stitching aficionados to celebrate the act of Stitching slowly with intention. 

 I’m on the road to finishing the Free Stitch from Primrose Cottage. I’m way behind! But I’m looking forward to stitching this one. If you sign up for her newsletter, you can download the chart for free. 

But I would like to finish this one first. 

I’m also stitching small initials for pincushion gifts. This will be a yearlong project.  I finished this “G” pincushion on Wednesday

SAHRR Round #6 ~ Quilter’s Choice

 

This week, Round #6 is hosted by Anja Quilts.  Anja chose Quilter’s Choice.  Hooray! Thanks, Anja. That gave me a chance to use the first hourglass blocks I made that were too small for the first round. And to combine them with the purple and yellow pansy fabric that I wanted to use, made for a relatively easy border. 

My plan is to use the pansy fabric for the binding also. I haven’t picked a backing fabric , but it will be purple!  I think I am pleased with this SAHRR.

Finished or Not Finished Friday

I always feel badly when I don't have anything to show for my time in the sewing room. I seem to "piddle away", but not much to show. 

I am participating in Sandra's Rainbow Neighbourhood QAL It's been so much fun.  I'm working on the sashing and sewing rows together. 

On the design wall - not very straight. I have to climb on a stool to reach the top of the flannel. I am unsteady so it's not a chore I do over and over. Up, place, pin and down. You get the idea. 

I also finished the last month of stitcheries. December of A Year in the Garden. I've been working on these little beauties for a few years.

I Like Thursday ~Ice Cream Memories

Last Friday was our anniversary and we did go out to eat, but Mr Busy surprised me with this Propane Fire Table. It is something I’ve wanted for awhile. It came with lava rock! 

This is it’s breaking-in fire! 

We quickly upgraded to blue glass chips! I love it!

Monday night I finished stitching this last block from Jenny of Elefantz’s A Year in the Garden  

I did it while we watched Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation on  Mountain of Movies streaming on Paramount+

tell us about a favorite memory from childhood of eating ice cream. Did your family go to Dairy Queen like mine did? 

There was a DQ in our town, but it wasn’t a place that we went often. The place to go was Fjord’s. A specialty hard ice cream shop, locally owned.sadly it’s no longer in business  in my hometown! It had to be a very special occasion to afford an ice cream cone there. There were 6 of us, my dad was self employed and my mom didn’t go to work til I was in HS. We were not wealthy!

Did you have a birthday ritual where you got anything you wanted at the restaurant?  

Not really! Birthdays did not involve eating out. My mom’s fried chicken and mashed potatoes was my requested meal! And chocolate cake served on this cake stand.

Here we used it for cupcakes for Miss B’s 6th birthday last July! Mom always made a chocolate layer cake!

 A ritual as I was an adult was, my son and daughter- in-law always bought a coffee ice cream cake from Coldstone. We didn't have a Coldstone in our small town. They lived in Phoenix and we would sometimes visit on my birthday. 

Has your taste changed from tutti-fruitti with sprinkles or does it still make your hear sing? 

I never liked tutti-fruition or and other fruit ice cream. The only exception was on my mom’s birthday, she requested orange sherbet, we all ate that! 

remember neopolitan three flavor ice cream bricks? I'd did out the chocolate first leaving the strawberry and vanilla for the folks! 

We sometimes had Neopolitan . My dad liked it I think. He would open the half gallon rectangle carton, unfold it flat and cut slabs of ice cream that had all three flavors. Sort of like this: 

They don't make ice cream in the paper rectangle carton anymore. Now it's in a "scround" and it's not a half gallon. Only 1.5 qts for the same price. But that a discussion for another day.

April 25 - May 1


1. Write post for ABC Table Scraps Challenge ✅ 

2. Look for backing for Long May She Wave. ✅

Found in my stash…4 yds of red sailboats and 1.5 yds of blue and white stars! That will work

3. Quilt more on Precarious and write an OMG post! ✅

       I actually wrote this post as soon as Patty posted the linky party on the 24th. But I did do more quilting  on it Sunday and Monday. Now one of  the orange  panels is done 

and a purple one!

4. Start on December stitchery for A Year in the Garden ✅

Soon I’ll start on the poinsettia petals! 

5. Make one purple string block, at least.✅

As long as the string bag is out and the mess is all over the sewing room, why make 1 string block. There are 6 now to add to the box of mono colored string blocks plus 7 crumb blocks made with the little bits. 

 
6. House #4 for Rainbow Neighbourhood QAL ✅

Why is it , my photos always look they are leaning into a wind? Must be true what Mr. Busy says whenever we are trying to hang a picture or a shelf or anything. I’m always 1/2 a bubble off! LOL!

Next week’s plan

May 2nd - May 8th. 

1. Quilt more color sections on Precarious!

2.  Get binding attached to The Any Kid quilt.

3.  Keep stitching on DECEMBER 

4.  Make  House #5 for Rainbow Neighbourhood QAL

5.  SPRING STAMPS SAL….stamp #3. Birds and Bees

6. Get backing ready for Long May She Wave so she can go to the quilter.  And find batting

Finished or Not Finished Friday #67 10-1-21

 

I have a two part finished or not today!

I finished the stitching on this Autumn stitchery. The design is 5.5” x5.5”. The fabric is 11.75”x11.75”. Just  FYI. I’m leaning toward a small Kitchen Quilt! 

But I did not finish it into anything.  Should it be a small pillow cover?   I already have 2 sofa pillows in the Halloween theme. Should it be a small wall hanging to hang in my kitchen?  Should I put a border on it and use it to decorate a bag?   Do you have a thought?  I'd love to hear it.

Last Week  September 21st - September 27th

1.Find some fabric for the backing of En Provence. ✅

Yikes! Makes me dizzy up close! :p

It's not my first choice, but it is purple and I had enough for a back without having to piece something. That was a win-win for me. 

2. Continue sewing rows of Hollow Nine Patches. Nope! :(

3. Yellow and Gray Project. ✅.  

 Made a start. I'm making yellow crumb blocks. 

I was the lucky winner of Kelly Young's newest book, Scrappy Improve Quilting. And it  was my inspiration. 

I had ordered this book   Crumb Quilts by Emily Bailey in August I think. She featured it on her facebook page before it was due for release. There are some great quilts in this book too! 

4. Read and Stitch on Autumn Embroidery ✅  

I finished The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie.

This is how the book came from my library. I thought it was very clever. It is Banned Books Week! this week!

I gave the book 4/5 stars. It wouldn't be everyone's taste. But I'm open to lots of different stories. This book deals with family, friendship, alcoholism, racism, and poverty.

and I stitched on my Autumn stitchery. ✅

Only the bird’s beak and the centers of the flowers left to do! Tonight should be a good time to finish that little bit up. Then a good pressing and it will be ready for borders.

I LIKE Thursday #62

 

Good Morning Grateful Bloggers!  I’m joining  LeeAnna over at Not Afraid of Color to list some likes from recent days! Join us? Just let LeeAnna know and she will add your link to her post. 

Last week when I walked near our library I found two planters that had some interesting color. 

The one above had some red and orange but also this ornamental cabbage that is green and fuchsia. I've always liked this plant. I've never planted it at my own house.  Have you?

Our small city has many planters that are installed at corners along several streets. Each planter is adopted by an organization or business or even an individual. The city provides the plantings, waters and fertilizes each one. It is the responsibility of the organization or in this case the business ( ReMax Realtors) to weed, prune and maybe decorate the planter. This one has a Scarecrow for the season. 

I picked the last 5 tomatoes from my plants. There was a warning of frost Monday night. It didn't happen, but it's fine. Also I'm getting a handful of strawberries most days!  

Mr. Busy mowed the lawn on Monday and while he was outside, our neighbors to the north of us brought over a small watermelon and a jar of homemade chokecherry  jelly. Oh my goodness!  Yummy!

I've been experiencing a sadness lately. I know I miss my sister every day. But this also brought home that Grief is not just for death. I feel like many of us are experiencing this kind of grief lately. Just know you are not alone.  Your blogging buddies are here. 

I'm sewing a bit more on my Autumn embroidery. New seasons of our favorite prime time shows have helped give me time to sit still and do this.
