Another finish or almost

I used some of my novelty fabrics a couple of years ago to make these Nine Patch and Rails blocks. Sylvia at Treadlestitches makes the best kids quilts with kid themed novelty fabric and she shared the idea and the tutorial that was originally from Libby at Life on the Hill here. !  In previous posts, I’ve referred to this quilt as a chunky churn dash!!!! I don't know where I got that or why I did that. It is not a churn dash, just similar enough that I mis-typed and then continued!!

Any way, there were 4 pink blocks, so I made one more, put them with some hourglass blocks and a pink border , then donated it to Jack’s Basket in Minnesota. 

Then I made a few more to get this layout!I used a denim looking sashing and plaid cornerstones. 

 I finally chose the red for a border.  I do like it, but then I wondered what I would use for a binding.The red would have been great, but I didn’t have enough.  I searched and search my chunks of fabric. I even considered a scrappy binding, but this quilt is already really busy. I finally looked online and ordered this one.  From Missouri Star Quilt Company in May 2021. It's called Liberty Lane by Stephanie Marrott for Wilmington Fabrics. It is just right. 

The light blue cloud flannel was in a tote that a friend insisted I take home with me!  Thanks, Kari!

I spent my stitching group time yesterday to get the binding stitched down.  I didn’t quite get it done, but it will be finished by tonight!

Entertainment:

We watched this last Friday night. Not many movies these days move me to tears these days, but this one did.  It's on Apple +

And then Sunday night it was a big winner at the Academy Awards. Nominated for 3 awards, won 3 awards. I hope you will get a chance to watch it, if you haven't already!

I'm still working on Lilac Girls. I will have to spend some daytime finishing it up. I usually read at night after I go to bed. Lately, I am so tired that I can only read about 10-20  pages before my "eyes slam shut"!

I had to share this one! Our older great granddaughter loves to “jump in muddy puddles!” Luckily her mama, the neat-nik, lets her do that! 💖. I just smile when I think of her splashing in puddles!

I want to participate in the making of string hearts in Bonnie Hunter's sew along. But I didn't have enough yellows left in my stash. She is teaming up with GE Designs and Gudrun  had a special of a blue and yellow bundle. The net proceeds to a Go Fund Me account for Ukraine. You can read about it here. I quickly ordered it and even though they were waiting for fabric and stated that in the website, it really did not take long. It arrived on Monday   So excited. 

I had company so it was a bit be for I was able to open it!

And the best thing this week, was this visit with my brother and SIL!  We talked and talked, went out for pizza and beer, watched CODA on Apple+ when we got home. ( They had not seen it and do not have Apple+ at their house. We were happy to watch it again!) They spent the night, I made breakfast casserole and we had coffee and fruit and more talk! It was so special!

To -Do Tuesday! March……

May go out like a lion! The oks saying may hold true. I noted in my journal that the 1st of March was unseasonably mild. Now they are predicting cold and maybe even snow for this afternoon and tomorrow! Hope they are wrong!

March 22- March 28

1. Finish TSC  and post to The Joyful Quilter ✅

2. Start quilting in Chunky Churn Dash for H2H donation! ✅

The denim blue thread is visible in some blocks more than others! 

So many different prints I just kept the color the same throughout!

After picking out the first two rows of quilting, I cut a new piece of batting. It’s Warm 100 and it has a scrim. The package states you can quilt it 10” apart. My lines are no more than 6”, so it should be good. So I’m back on track “ i

3. Keep working on Growing Up Odd blocks! ✅ I got two blocks done and moved the blocks into my sewing room’s design wall. 

My brother and SIL are coming for an overnight visit, so I was neatening up! I need 5 more blocks! There will be sashing between the blocks also. 

And tasks for next week…

March 29 - April 4

1. Get a start on pink! Happy Blocks and  ZigZag blocks! 

2. Trim and attach binding to Chunky Churn Dash! 

3. Stitch on August’s Year in the Garden. 

4. Make some Bow Blocks for Melva’s “Pieces in the Garden” and download Block 3 from her site! 

That should keep  me busy. Of course there are other non sewing related tasks. Like laundry and cooking. It may get nice enough to start on our lawn clean-up. And I need to get a birthday card in the mail to our grandson-in-law.

Hands to Help donation #1

 

I put together a top for donation.

Ninja Friends, from this book! ↓ The pattern is called  Simple Gifts. It's a great book, recommended to me by Nancy at Grace and Peace Quilting. All these fabrics, just a tad more than fat quarter each were in a tote given to me by a friend. She said, “I’ll never use them!” I knew I would!

Then the backing

Odd pieces of flannel, pieced to make a backing for Ninja Friends. 

It’s quilted and bound! Washed and dried. Ready to go to give some little, a quilty hug.

Last ScrapHappy Saturday of March 2022!

Last week I promised the finish project I was working on for Table Scraps Challenge. Yellow, of course and with flowers. 

 Finished on my cutting table!

Even a label made!  That is a real finish!

 

Flowers in the fabric, flowers in the backing and flowers on display. I love it!

OMG for March Finish Link Up ~ Goal Not Met!

 

My goal was to make 7 of these large blocks to finish off Growing Up Odd!   

What was I thinking? My other monthly sewing of RSC blocks, Table Scraps Challenge and quilting on two donation quilts did not require or in some cases even allow the use of leaders and enders. 

I only completed two blocks, cut the remaining sashing pieces, and berated myself several times!

I will be carrying this goal over to April!

Finished or Not Finished Friday! A Little Donation Quilt and a Happy Table Topper

I've finally finished the small donation quilt I'm calling Ninja Friends.  The quilting went very smoothly. The serpentine stitch across the width 2.5" apart and up and down the length 1.75" apart using the guide on my walking foot. It made a rectangular grid that mimicked the rectangular size of the quilt. 

It's bound and washed and dried.  I'm really happy with it! It will be one of my donations to Hands 2 Help. 

And this is the happy yellow March entry for the Table Scraps Challenge hosted by The Joyful Quilter. 

It's six different 6.5" blocks with more than six different yellow or gold fabrics. I added the 2 inch scrap of sunflower fabric to give it a bit of "focus"!

It's backed with a black flowered fabric given to me in a donation tote. I bound it with the backing. 

Two small finishes.    And 6 days left in the month. I do have another small child size quilt that I though I was ready to quilt. I used an odd piece of batting that I could not get to lay flat. When I started quilting there were numerous wrinkles in the backing. The quilting has now been all removed. And tomorrow I will cut a different batting and start over.
