First Midweek in December

 

Just a little notice that I may post sporadically this month. Not that I’ve been consistent recently! LOL

My focus last week was cleaning up after Thanksgiving, packing and planning for our trip to spend Christmas with our son. We haven’t flown anywhere since 2012. Mr. Busy had a bad anxiety attack on the airplane going to Arizona and declared “ never again will I fly!” ✈️

That’s been a long 12 years and lots has changed. We are older, less mobile and less strong. But he decided we should spend Christmas again with our son. So here we are. He handled the flight with ease. But we didn’t pack as much as when we drive. 🧳🧳👜 and a backpack 🎒 

All the felt ornaments were completed for our daughter and her family, along with appropriate gift cards or “real money” for the youngest. Two were mailed to our granddaughter in Vermont.

And the gold fabric in the background is a Nancy Halvorsen Christmas print that was in my stash. Supplemented with a second piece if was big enough for backing fabric for my Hometown Christmas quilt.

 I helped a neighbor trim a quilt and advised her on binding. It was her first such endeavor. I haven’t seen the finished quilt but was given to her son’s girlfriend at Thanksgiving. I hope she will share a photo. 

And I gave some thought to a Rainbow Scrap Challenge block for 2025. I will have a “Finish a UFO” component to my year too. 

Maybe a Potato Chip Block!

It’s Already Wednesday !

 I haven’t been working on anything for RSC or TableScraps Challenge. Since we made our decision to do a Christmas trip, that has been my focus. 

There were license plates that needed to be renewed, Real Estate taxes that needed to be paid, and a tax reduction form to be filed. (This because we are old, and have paid taxes in this country for over 25 years!) Then my Driver’s License renewal form showed up. I needed an eye exam. Life stuff!! But time consuming. 

I started making a replacement Mom Bag for my granddaughter. It’s a Birdie Sling bag from Amy Butler. The fabrics are mostly from my stash, but I did need to purchase some fusible fleece.  And there wasn’t enough of the purple fabric I had originally picked, so that needed to be remedied. I got a deal on that purple fabric. It’s Chalk and Charcoal by Jennifer Sampou for Robert Kaufman. Made in Japan. Deanna offered me a discount for taking the last of the bolt and I had a punch card for $10.00 off. You can’t have too much purple! :)

I need to sew lining pieces together, make the gussets, make and add the straps and it’s done! I want to get it done by Thanksgiving. I should be able to do that!

Oh, and we are hosting Thanksgiving. Not a huge group, but more than I usually cook for. So recipes are being gathered and ingredients checked off!

Today there is a hair appointment scheduled and grocery pick up!  Busy…busy!

A Fall Wall Hanging

 I've been reading From My Carolina Home's Fall Fortnight Posts. Although I didn't join in, it did inspire me to get out a UFO from last year. 

This kit was a gift and I started reading directions and cutting fabric. Then came the direction to use a bias tape maker for the leaf stems. I don't own one. I put out a call to see if I could borrow one. I received an answer. I did not know anything about the maker and when the owner asked me what size I needed, I couldn't say. The instructions were not specific. That sort of stalled me. I made the HST for the leaves and then got disappointed that I couldn't go forward. 

Long story short, I dug in again last week. I read and reread the directions and finally decided I would just make the strips by hand!  1 " strips were pressed in half, then opened and the edges were pressed to the middle resulting in a 1/2" strip. I seemed to work. I continued. 

Yesterday morning , it looked like this. All the parts on the design wall, some stitched together, but more to do. 

Last evening it looked like this. The pumpkins are complete, the leaf sections are complete, the center 36-patch is sewn together.  Next the sashings and then a backing and quilting and binding. I'll hang it for November. It's not really Thanksgiving, but definitely Fall. 

So , I'm back in the sewing room and feeling productive.  I'm joining the linky party at Midweek Makers, hosted by Susan at Quilt Fabrication.

Project Quilting 15.5. Wearables

I waited for inspiration. But I promised myself to only work from my stash , soooooooo

Monday 3-4-24

I’ve sewed square dance skirts, blouses and made scarf ties for Mr. Busy, I’ve made Easter dresses and pjs, and shorts for my kids. I’ve sewn pajama pants, bed jackets and skirts for myself, when I was younger and thinner. And aprons galore. But the only patterns I still own are aprons, pajamas and scrubs. I’ve had this fabric for ages. It was suppose be curtains for an apartment. It has made home theatre pillows, camping pillow covers and there was yardage left. Now it will be Movie Night Lounge Pants for me.

It’s directional and I had an “oops moment”! I cut the fabric so the cars were right side up , but not right sides together, so one back was backwards! UGH! So I had to piece the fabric to be able to recut the crotch! I’ll never wear them to Walmart 😂 ( or out in public anywhere)  so it’s OK.  That is all done and the inner leg seams are sewn and the center crotch seam. The pockets ( yay, there are pockets) are pinned to the front and back and the buttonholes for the drawstring are in the front waistband area! Done for Monday!

Tuesday 3-5-24

Pockets attached to sides and topstitched. Side seams sewn, waistband elastic inserted and hems ready for final turn. 

They seem a bit full in the tush. Now I’m a hippy (not hippie) Norwegian girl,  so I’ll wash them and see if that makes a difference. If not, I’ll adjust the inside leg seam. But I call them a WEARABLE. Perfect for Movie Night at home or bingeing on Firefly Lane  or Mr & Mrs Smith!

Midweek Makers. February 7th

And also a one week project for Project Quilting 15.3 , INSIDE OUT!  All fabric used in this project bag is wrong side out! Though it’s hard to tell, the vinyl really reflects any light. If you want to read my lengthy post about Project Quilting, it’s this one.

Midweek Maker. Good Bye January, Hello February

Last week I finished an entry for Project Quilting 15.2. The prompt was Sky Colors, Not Blue!

Gray skies are Gonna Clear Up!

And then Monday and yesterday this happened to my SAHRR  “Rudy”!  Round 2  was “ use two colors.”

I think it reads Red and White.

Now he is back to 10.5 “square” . So make up your mind Judy, Square or Rectangular? Sigh!

Will have to wait for round 3!

Midweek Makers

I’ve been absent from blogger! This is part of the reason why!  I’ve/ We’ve been MAKING a mess followed by a move back in. 

There was carpet that was too shaggy!  Pins were lost, chairs didn’t roll smoothly, it was rippling up under my cutting table! 

No actual sewing was accomplished, but I’ll be excited to sew my first seam in the cleaner, hopefully less cluttered space. 

Sew!!! I actually was able to finally get to my machine, yesterday the 12th. I made 2 bowl cozies for the neighbor of our son. She requested some cozies after she saw his. I searched the LQSs for some fabric that spoke to me, but didn't find "the one"!  So I searched my huge basket of yardage, and found this blue paisley. C. requested blue and gray.  The gray stylized floral was in my stash. A small beginning, but a beginning at least!

Mid Week Makers

Some slow stitching spilled over into Wednesday. My sewing room has been emptied and packed up into Mr. Busy’s “build room”! This in preparation for new flooring in most of our downstairs. 

What’s a girl to do? She does counted cross stitch! This design is from Melisa at Pinker n Punkin Quilting.  This link will take you to a post with a list of all ( well maybe not all, but many) of Melisa’s Fall and Turkey themed charts!

It’s not a FFO , but it is an FO! 😉. My plan is to finish it much like Melisa did hers.

Starting November- Midweek Makers #001!

Though some of you have seen my recent makes……this is just a recap for me..

My October OMG was to get this too-Long-in-the-UFO-closet to a flimsy. And therefore on the road to a finish. 

Depending on who I hire to do the quilting, I will need either a backing that is 8” more than the front or 12” bigger than the front. I have to decide. 

Then I made this little mug mat for my chair side table. It’s just the right size for a coffee mug and a cookie!

I’m sharing for the very first time with Midweek Makers at Quilt Fabrication. I’ve long admires Susan’s designs and tutorials.
