Project Quilting 17.2

 

HOORAY!  I’m a fan of plaid. I don’t use it predominantly, but if I have plaid in the color I need, it goes in my project. 

January is a time for me to rethink my life, rearrange my stuff. …….I’m off to find plaid, blue I hope!

Success finding blue plaids. And some red, though they look sort of pink here. 

I decided on a Market Bag. Pattern from designer Carolyn S. Vagts. 

It calls for charm squares. My scraps aren’t always 5” and bigger. I could get 4.5” squares from most . So my bag won’t be 13.5 x 13.5, but I’m ok with that. It is 12”x12”x 4”. I quilted 1/4” on each side of all the seams. 

From a stack of plaid scraps came a market bag. I followed the instructions except for the smaller squares. 

The handles are a different fabric, closer to a gingham than a true tartan plaid. This bag has the handles going from back to front . Other bags I have made, have a handle on the front and a matching one on the back. I’m anxious to see if I like this better. 

I put a pocket on the inside, cause you gotta have a pocket. The lining is a buffalo plaid left over from my nephew’s Minnesota Gophers quilt. So definitely there are Scads of Plaids in this useful bag.

January TableScraps Challenge

 

Ready for Table Scraps Challenge 2025?  Hosted by Joy at The Joyful Quilter this is my 5th year of participating in this challenge . If you are interested, Joyful’s actual introduction post is Here, but this year’s  first post is this ONE. Jump in anytime!

In December, Angela from So Scrappy, announced the color for the upcoming month of January as Pink. The Joyful Quilter  gave us this prompt.. WARM BEVERAGE/ANYTHING COZY… It’s Project Quilting season and SAHRR(Stay At Home Round Robin). Yikes I’d better get my ducks in a row!.  

I thought of a mug rug, of course and a table runner, of course. But I wanted something different. So I thought, and worked on pink RSC blocks, and Project Quilting. And thought some more.

One day I was walking by this Christmas Quilt on the extra design wall in the hallway. It’s waiting for it’s appointment with Glenda, (the longarm quilter)    *  Second column  bottom row: 

I had the pattern. 

What about on a gift bag. Yup! That will work. I have been using crumb blocks in my scraps challenges. This time I traced the pattern for the cup and heart on fusible. I use Pellon 805. That is what I have, but there are a lot of different brands. Ironed it to a strip of raspberry solid. Zigzagged around the heart and the cup. Right sides together, I sewed the long sides, Voila! A bag, and I boxed the bottom for this one. A casing  and a dig through my  pink/red ribbon box for 1/8th inch pink ribbon, resulted in this bag. I’ll fill it with cocoa packets, apple cider packets and some herbal tea.

Finished or Not Friday.

 OMGOSH! Can you believe I actually finished something! I’m linking up to Finished or Not Friday at Alycia Quilts. 

Several years ago I made my granddaughter a Mom Bag, from this pattern. My seam guide was used a lot as was a piece of tape on my machine. The pattern uses 1/2” seam allowances and I needed a visual reminder!

It’s the Birdie Sling from Amy Butler. “ Mom Bag” is my name for a replacement diaper bag. Her kids were 7 and 2 then. She wore it out! A few weeks ago I offered to make her a new bag. I showed her all my bag and purse patterns and she chose the Birdie Sling again. 

So here it is finished. 

I hope she likes it.

It’s Already Wednesday !

 I haven’t been working on anything for RSC or TableScraps Challenge. Since we made our decision to do a Christmas trip, that has been my focus. 

There were license plates that needed to be renewed, Real Estate taxes that needed to be paid, and a tax reduction form to be filed. (This because we are old, and have paid taxes in this country for over 25 years!) Then my Driver’s License renewal form showed up. I needed an eye exam. Life stuff!! But time consuming. 

I started making a replacement Mom Bag for my granddaughter. It’s a Birdie Sling bag from Amy Butler. The fabrics are mostly from my stash, but I did need to purchase some fusible fleece.  And there wasn’t enough of the purple fabric I had originally picked, so that needed to be remedied. I got a deal on that purple fabric. It’s Chalk and Charcoal by Jennifer Sampou for Robert Kaufman. Made in Japan. Deanna offered me a discount for taking the last of the bolt and I had a punch card for $10.00 off. You can’t have too much purple! :)

I need to sew lining pieces together, make the gussets, make and add the straps and it’s done! I want to get it done by Thanksgiving. I should be able to do that!

Oh, and we are hosting Thanksgiving. Not a huge group, but more than I usually cook for. So recipes are being gathered and ingredients checked off!

Today there is a hair appointment scheduled and grocery pick up!  Busy…busy!

Project Quilting 15.3

Trisha aka Quilt Chicken is the mastermind behind the challenges for Project Quilting. Sunday, she  gave us “Inside Out” as the challenge or prompt to make something quilty or artsy, or useful or not!  

My first thought on Sunday was the Berenstain Bears book, Inside, Outside, Upside Down. Then, I remembered the Pixar movie, INSIDE OUT!   Too complicated.


I finally caved and just decided to make something inside out! It was a bit of a struggle. I made a project bag, using this pattern from MODA. 

I’ve used it before. Usually the pretty piecing goes on the back. Like this one!

For this bag everything is backwards and INSIDE OUT! The pieced back is now the inside. The fabric attached to the zipper and the vinyl are wrong side out. Even the zipper is inside out!

Here are the fabrics so you can tell wrong sides from right sides. When I was “resetting” my sewing room after new flooring was installed, I found a box with pieces cut for a quilt I never finished. I didn’t want to continue with this mystery quilt that had curves and fusible bias tape attached!

It’s useable! But I may not be able to stand looking at the wrong side and exposed seams. We will have to see! A really cute inside out bag is number 6 in the Linky Party from @sredhead22.

Project Quilting 14.4.

 Welcome to Busy Hands Are Happy Hands. And welcome to the wonderful world of Project QUILTING hosted by Kim Lapacek @ Persimon Dreams!!  Trish Frankland @ QuiltChicken is the creator of the crazy challenges that participants will face during the next 8 weeks. Trish picks the challenge prompts because that allows our hostess, Kim L. to participate just like the rest of us.

This is my 1st year of participation in the Challenge.

We can blame Joy at The Joyful Quilter for this madness added to my somewhat stressful life. I admired from the wings all her creations in this challenge and she has been a supportive friend as I have tried to spread my creative wings. She has a willing and very creative partner. Her friend LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color joined her. And that continues this season too. Lee Anna has been an encourager to me via blogland. She is amazingly creative! 


This is my 3rd project. I missed the 1st week, because we were traveling . I may go back after the entire challenge is over and try to do the first one. It looked like a fun one and maybe I have an idea. But here are the links to 14.2 Pink TInt and 14.3 54 40 or Fight. This week the prompt from Trish is PQ 14.4 A Novel Project .

The project should be inspired by a book or reading.  I couldn’t limit my project to just one book. I read all kinds of books. Current bestsellers, chick lit, cozy mysteries, biographies, autobiographies, Young Adult, even some thrillers . Our own public Library has been undergoing protests, threats and forced reforms due to a certain faction of our community objecting to some books in the children’s section of our library. Certain books have been pulled from the shelves, some have been relocated. The County Commissioner have forced the library to cut their affiliation with the American Library Association and the Wyoming Library Association. This appalls me!

 Several years ago I made this bag and a second one donated to the silent auction that the Friends of the Library holds every pre Christmas season as a fundraiser.

Side One:  I embroidered titles of some of my favorite books at the time, on some of the spines. 

Left to right:  ROOM, A Man Called Ove, The Fault in Our Stars, Elm Creek Quilts , (Your Cat and You, not a real title, but I couldn't come up with a cat title to use on that cat fabric!), Brown Girl Dreaming and Most Wanted.  None of these books are banned titles.

This time my mini wall hanging is based on this bag pattern. It was a free download in 2012. It is no longer available.

 



I had some text print fabric that has been in my stash for a while. It is excerpts from Anne of Green Gables. It’s my background. I elected not to piece the word READ this time and instead use appliqué.

The letters for applique were included in the pattern, I reduced them on my copier.

The backing fabric is some from a donation tub. I do like to read, so why not "smiley faces" and this time I put hanging triangles in the top two corners for a dowel rod and added a small pocket to the lower right hand corner(from the front). I will keep a list of the banned books I have read and also the ones I will read this year! 

The first I will choose is And Tango Makes Three. A children’s book written by Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson. Illustrated by Henry Cole.
