I am linking up late to Book Date's feature, It's Monday! What Are You Reading?


If I had written and posted this late Sunday, I could tell you I was reading Liar, Liar, Tabloid Writer 

by Suzy Quint.  But it is now 2:00 pm Monday and I just finished it. Rather abruptly too, I might add. It was coming to a conclusion, I thought. Annaliese has been arrested, Alec has just discovered the relationship between Annaliese and Cleo. And he was starting to have some real feelings for Cleo. Then the last sentence says, Cleo and Alec's story concludes in Liar, Liar, Heart's Desire.  Bummer!


So now I'll go on to reading the last of the 3 summer selections for my Face to Face book club. We meet again in September. We decided to pick 3 novel of Fredrik Backman. I have finished A Man Called Ove and My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry. So I will read
Britt- Marie Was Here  this week.

Because I like these books so much I may have to pick another before the week is over. If that happens, I guess I'll chose between Jane Green's The Beach House 

and Kristin Hannah's Between Sisters.  Any one have a favorite? 

Until next time, I'll be reading and putting a binding on a Christmas Wall Hanging. Maybe I'll even finish the place mats for the camper. Or maybe I'll just hang out on Facebook and wait for my son or daughter-in-law to post pictures of their new granddaughter.  She is our 5th great grandchild. She lives in Arizona, so I don't know when we will get to meet her in person.

and so far it is living up to my expectations. 

I still have Liar Liar, Tabloid Writer on my Kindle. I haven't been back to it, but at soon as the J.D. Robb book( a library loan) is finished, I will go on to Ms. Quint's offering. 

Investigative journalist Cleo Morgan’s stories have created Pulitzer buzz, but circumstance push her into a lucrative but career-destroying job writing for a tabloid.

Alejandro Ramirez is blown away by the new star reporter. There's definitely chemistry. Except she thinks she's better than everyone at the tabloid where they work. That grates on him since she's going to be writing stories about aliens and Elvis sightings just like the rest of them.

In spite of the chemistry, she doesn't want to have anything to do with the smug news whore she thinks he is. Except she's already having fantasies about this hot Cuban ex-pat who's showing her the ropes at her new job. Before they have a chance to make this attraction work, Cleo's mother, an ex-Vegas showgirl, is charged with the murder of a Las Vegas casino owner. To clear her mother, Cleo will have to see that Alejandro hasn't sold out, and he will learn that she really is as good as she thinks she is. 

I thought I might have some down time while attending the state Quilt Convention this weekend, but I was out of the house at 6 am and did not return until after 8 pm. By then I was so tired that only a shower and a glass of wine seemed appropriate. So I will work on Ceremony in Death this week and also some of the projects acquired at the vendor booths this weekend.  😃

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

It's really summer here in the high plains desert!  All last week the temperature reached 90 and above. This week looks like a repeat. That is hot for our part of the country!  Thank goodness it cools off some at night. I am writing this post at 6:23 am local time and it is 61 degrees. We have central air but it is an old system and we hate the noise. So we turn off the compressor as soon as the sun goes down and it starts to cool.

I am keeping up with my goal of reading 24  books this year. I realize that is doable and a not a lofty goal. Most of you bookies read many many more. But I do what I can do.

I'm almost finished with:

One True Thing by Anna Quindlen.  This book is amazing. I mean the story is wonderful, about the relationship between a daughter and her mother and father. But Ms Quindlen says things that most of us only think and would not likely utter out loud. A few pages back, a passage touched me deeply. It has been a long while since a book felt so personal and brought me to tears. Not sobbing, inconsolable tears, but the "OMG, how did she know this about me" kind. 

Upcoming this weekend, is our state quilt guild convention. I will be there Friday, Saturday and some of Sunday. This year it is in our own town, so I will sleep in my own bed. But of course, meals will be shared, friendships renewed and hopefully new techniques will be learned. If I get One True Thing finished early on, next up is: 

I know I will enjoy this one too, but in a totally different way.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? OOPS LATE!!

Last week in June.  I'm staying a little bit ahead of my goal to read, 24 books this year. I downgraded my goal from a few years ago. Mainly because of family commitments and also some sewing challenges I entered this year.  What are you reading this week? This week I am reading:

Paris Runaway by Paulita Kincer

and

Liar, Liar, Tabloid Writer by Suzie Quint

Both of these have been on my kindle for quite awhile. I am over 1/2 done with Paris Runaway. I am enjoying it!  I always like Paulita's writing. She draws me in with her characters and the situations they end up in. I wonder what I would do if my teenage daughter took a flight to Paris without telling anyone!  I can't imagine just chasing after her without much of a plan.  I'm a bit of a wuss as far as travel to faraway places. Must be the reason I like Paulita's writing. She takes me where I would never go on my own. 

I am barely started on Liar Liar but I am already involved. I don't know yet exactly why Cleo Morgan  has had to stoop to writing for a tabloid, but I want to know. This one is a bit on the racy side. Not that this old granny minds that one bit. Live vicariously, I always say!!

I finished My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman.  I will wait to do a review until my book club meets again in September. We are reading 3 of Backman's books this summer. A Man Called Ove,

I also picked up Ceremony in Death by J,D, Robb

at the library yesterday. So I have some reading to do! 

There will also be some sewing and some baby watching this week. On Saturday we are planning our youngest great grandchild's 1st Birthday!!  Her actual birthday is the 7th of July, but her daddy is off this next weekend, so the party will be then.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? 5/29/17

It's Memorial Day here in the US and although my heart aches for our country, I must remember those that served so we have the freedoms we enjoy. I pray that our freedoms continue and that we the people have a voice.

On my FB page I shared these:  This is my dad, probably about summer 1946 judging from the other photos that were will this one in my mom's belongings. I lost him too young. I was 23, by sister and brothers still in school. He was 49, killed in a car accident.

This is our son. He served in the Air Force in 1987-1990. Luckily for him and for us, not during wartime. I am proud of the man he has become. He would cringe at this photo, but it is the only one I have of him in his uniform, except for his wedding to his first wife and I can't publish that. 


I am finally back to reading more. My book club is taking a break during the summer, but we have selected 3 of the titles by Fredrik Backman for our summer reading choices.

I had already read A Man Called Ove and liked it a lot. 

This one was one that our friend and member, Helen wanted to read. She was 84 and at our March meeting was having trouble with her hip. Easter weekend she fell and though she had had a hip replacement, she broke the surrounding bone. Her heart problem complicated further surgery, so she was admitted to  rehab in a town 2 hours away.  She missed our April meeting.  We staying in touch with her through emails and because one of our members is a friend of one of her daughters. She raised 10 children on a ranch in NE Wyoming. We met the third Tuesday in May, discussed our books and decided to chose these because Helen was interested and we knew she was recuperating now in a hospital a bit closer to home. By the next morning Wednesday, we got word that she had passed away, due to heart issues. We will miss this lovely woman of God, strong spirited, lover of literature and her fellow man.   

I am looking forward to the discussion of all three of these. I am currently reading my grandmother asked me to tell you she's sorry. 

Last week I finished, though not in Audio format.  I read a regular sized paperback from the library. It looked and felt liked it had been read many times. I enjoyed it too. I especially like the main character Eve Dallas. If you like detective stories, with a bit of romance ( or just plain lust) and you don't mind setting in the future, try this series. It is set in 2058 in NYC.  Still gritty and "happening". 

I've sort of fallen away from my sewing room in the last couple of weeks. I attended a retreat  and started several projects there, finished 2 but that is all. I did not complete my challenges for May at all. One I did not even start, although I did locate it in the stack of project boxes and bags! The weather is improving here, I got some pot planted for in front of our house and on the back deck. I need one more for the front porch. I put the flag out this morning when I got up, I think I would like a patriotic themed planter this year. I will go looking for an appropriate pot and selection of flowers today.

I am really into this story now. Willa Chance just keeps getting into trouble. And Sheriff Eddie Striker seems to be there at every turn. Who will find out first, who killed Lavinia.

I have just started this library book.  I know I will enjoy this story as much as I enjoyed the ones that preceded it. 


I have this in the audio version and I am listening to it as I get my early morning steps in walking around our neighborhood and while stitching on a couple of recent projects. Multi-tasking is something that gives me a chance to do two things I enjoy or at the least to get into a story as I get some exercise
. 

I am loving the narrator in this one. Very engaging. 


Have you read any of these books?  Happy 4th of July to my American friends and Happy 1st week of July to others. We are still waiting for the new addition to our family. Mama is so ready to be "not pregnant".  Baby is just taking her time deciding to arrive.

I am so disappointed in my reading lately. I can't seem to stay on task and finish a book in a reasonable time. I could blame it on the fact that the TV is always on in the living room, but I could go to the family room in the basement. I blame it on too much time spent looking at other blogs, but that is fun too. I could blame it on that I have other things I  do too, like quilt and not to be forgotten, cook and clean and laundry. "Sigh"

OK, whining over!!


This week I am still working on Broad Influence.

I have been learning a lot and enjoying the read. But waiting til bedtime to read is not working.



And I have not turned a page in Ghostly Paws

I did attend a Open Sew Day on Wednesday. It is a fund raiser for our local Quilt Show Steering Committee and because we (are on call waiting on our granddaughter's baby #2, I took just hand sewing. So if she called, I would not have to pack up a machine and all the paraphernalia that goes with sewing away from home. 

This morning there is a distinct smell of smoke in the air. There are several timber fires burning within a 90 mile radius of our small city. It is so dry this year and we got very little snow last winter. I feel so bad for those directly affected and pray for cooler weather and some rain.Thankful too that we have firefighters both local and state and federally funded, that have the means and the courage to battle these infernos. 

 Close up and far away. It is terrifying!  One family has lost everything.

 The rest of us have lost our beautiful vistas in our home state.

Surprisingly, I am liking this book. I am learning some things, and discovering some new words.

A favorite quote so far:  " Women aren't necessarily less partisan than men, but they are more inclined to listen and try to understand the other side." 


On my Kindle:

I am finally engaged in this one, well the first in the collection anyway. The main character, Wilhelmina Chance, is the proprietor of the bookstore in her hometown of Mystic Notch, New Hampshire.  And of course, she has discovered a body, the body of Lavinia Babbage the head librarian in her hometown.  And there is a cat, Pandora.  I'm hooked!

Not sure how my reading will go this week. Our granddaughter is in early stages of labor and Mr. Busy and I are in the wings to take care of the almost 3 year old, soon to be big brother.  Reading time could be at a premium.

I will like it I am sure, if I can just pick up my Kindle and get to it. 

I am enjoying this one too. Although it is the 10th in the Dixie Hemingway series, it doesn't feel as though I have missed anything. Dixie tells her back story, or least parts of it, well enough that I do not feel lost at all. I am pretty sure I will gladly pick up the first several in this series. ( This one was won in a Giveaway at Cathy's blog, Kittling: Books.Thanks again Cathy)


Next I will select either:  Broad Influence by Jay Newton-Small,  one of my book club's summer selections

2016 will be one of the most historic years in politics: It marks the potential for the first female President of the United States, and the 100th anniversary of the first woman elected to Congress. Additionally, in 2016, single women will be one of the most pivotal voting groups heading into the general election, being courted by both Democrats and Republicans.

or The Quilter's Homecoming by Jennifer Chiaverini, a series I started years ago and then let fall away.
