"This majestic, moving novel is an instant classic, a book that will be read, discussed and taught beyond the rest of our lives." _ Chicago Tribune
A Lesson Before Dying is set in a small Cajun community in the late 1940's. Jefferson, a young black man, is an unwitting party to a liquor store shootout in which three men are killed; the only survivor, he is convicted of murder and sentenced to death. The story revolves around Grant Wiggins struggle to honor his aunt's request of him to visit Jefferson in his cell and impart his learning and his pride to Jefferson before his death. It is a compelling story with moving dialogue and a unique insight into the Cajun community in the 1940's. I wonder how that has changed in our present time. I will never know, but I can hope that it has changed for the better.
